NEW DATE SET FOR SYMPHONICA
9.17.99

An article at jamtv.com talks again about the upcoming Symphonica album/video and tourdates, most importantly, it mentions a new release date...

Metallica is getting cabin fever. Despite the fact that the band swore they needed to spend some time at home with their families after winding down an extensive U.S. tour last July, it looks like the world's most renowned headbangers are itching to get back on the road.

Drummer Lars Ulrich confided to fans during an online chat last week that plans are afoot for a brief U.S. tour early next year. "We are doing a short tour around the millennium with a confirmed show in Detroit on New Year's Eve and looking at about half a dozen other dates on each side," he said, "most probably around the Great Lakes area." So far, confirmed acts for the millennial show are Kid Rock and Ted Nugent.

And that's not all. It looks like Metallica will break out the oboes again and take their symphonic collaboration with superstar conductor Michael Kamen on the road. According to a spokesperson for Kamen, the maestro has had discussions with the metallurgists about staging another bombastic event, and they're looking at a tentative November date at Madison Square Garden.

The show -- if it goes off as planned -- will coincide with the release of a live recording of Metallica's collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony last April 14 and 15 at Berkeley's Community Theatre. According to Metallica's label, they are going to release an as-yet untitled record from the San Francisco sessions on November 16.

LARS TALKS TO MTV
9.16.99

From MTV.com:

Metallica's Ulrich Talks Symphonic Album And Mini-Tour

Metallica is currently putting the finishing touches on a live symphonic album recorded during the band's two-night stand with the San Francisco Symphony in April and tentatively due out in November.

The metal machine veterans are also discussing a short symphonic tour to be staged in conjunction with the release of the LP, which will feature two brand new songs, "Minus Human" and "No-Leaf Clover," that were recorded during the Berkeley, California shows.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich sat down with MTV News backstage at last week's Video Music Awards in New York City and discussed the progress of the live record as well as its designs to get orchestrated once again.

"We are in the process of mixing and finishing it right now," Ulrich said of the upcoming symphonic album. "So, with a little luck on our side it should be out in mid-November…. I don't want to give it all away, but we're looking to do a couple of selective promotion appearances around [the record] that will most likely involve symphony orchestras in the cities that we're [performing] in."

"After we've done the symphony shows," he continued, "we're gonna do a run of dates around the millennium. After we've done that, we're gonna take some time off. It's been 4 years now non-stop, and we're going to take probably six months off and then start thinking about a new studio album in the spring or fall of next year."

Details about the expected symphonic tour remain forthcoming, but Metallica has already signed on to play a New Year's Eve gig in Detroit with gonzo guitarist Ted Nugent.

TOUR INFO

TOP CONCERT IN THE 90S
9.12.99

The latest issue of Rolling Stone features an article by David Fricke giving his top concerts of the 1990s. Included was Metallica's Snake Pit Tour of 1991-1993. Excerpts:

"The principal issue was contact -- how to create more of it, between band and audience. Metallica's solution was the Snake Pit, an arrowhead-shaped stage with runways jutting deep into the crowd -- and a triangular hole in the center where, each night, between 150 and 200 fans stood literally inside the show, within easy high-fiving distance of guitarist Kirk Hammett, drummer Lars Ulrich, bassist Jason Newsted and Metallica's leonine blond stage captain, singer-guitarist James Hetfield.

Hetfield would always bitch about the fact that he wasn't close to the audience," says Metallica co-manager Peter Mensch, who came up with the Snake Pit idea. "So I said, 'The mountain can't come to Mohammed. Let's bring Mohammed to the mountain.'" So Metallica dragged the Snake Pit across America for nine months, then around much of the world and back to the U.S. as part of a two-year global assault that, near the end of the line in the spring of '93, was officially titled the Nowhere Else to Roam Tour."

KERRANG!
9.11.99

Some quotes from Kerrang, thanks to Maurizio in Italy!

"Metallica could be featured in the forthcoming documentary 'Revelations: Paradise Lost Revisited' which is expected to premiere in the Us early next year. The Original movie, 1996 'Paradise Lost'documented the aftermath of a brutal triple killing in Arkansas and the subsequent arrest and convinction of the local teenagers for the crime. As suspects were metallica fans, the band had three songs included on the soundtrack: 'Orion', 'Call Of Ktulu' and 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)'. This was the fist time Metallica had given permission for their music to be used on a soundtrack. Director Bruce Sinofsky says that the most recent cut of the sequel has nine Metallica songs included in it, and adds that drummer Lars Ulrich has already given his blessing to the film after watching a rough cut of it and finds it "just powerful" as its predecessor."

Also, "Dave Mustaine won the Kerrang award for Classic Songwriter, collecting the award Dave said: "I'm really pleased to have received this award, and I'd like to dedicate it to a little Danish drummer who turned me to Kerrang! way back in 1982. This award is for Lars."

...and "Some Dave quotes: " I don't have a problem with guys any more", referring to james and Lars. "Up until about three years ago I'd turn off the radio if a Metallica song came on,but now I'm fine with it". "I think they are a good band. I get really offended when people come up to me and say 'Metallica Suck' just because they think that's what I want to hear. Those are the same sort of people I believe would go up to saying that suck"
