DETROIT FREE PRESS

The Detroit Free Press published in October 28's edition an article about the Y2K show, featuring an interview with Lars.

THE CENTURY CITY OF ROCK
New Year's Eve at the 'Dome will be one of those nights
BY BRIAN McCOLLUM
FREE PRESS POP MUSIC WRITER

Let New York have its glowing ball. Let London have its Millennium Dome party. Let the rest of the world have its computer gliches. For the final New Year's Eve of the 20th Century, Detroit will host a rock show for the ages.

The bill is inpenetrable: Metallica, Ted Nugent, Kid Rock and the new band from Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee. The venue is century-sized: the Pontiac Silverdome.' The show was announced in March, but antsy fans will finally be able to get their hands on tickets Saturday, when seats go on sale through Ticketmaster and at the Silverdome box office.

For Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, the Motor City was logical choice for biggest party yet.

"Metallica and Detroit go back to the 'Ride the Lightning' tour," Ulrich says, which stopped at the State Theatre in the mid-'80s. "We've had such a strong relationship with you guys. Why be obvious about it, like Paris or London? Maybe playing Detroit isn't going to get as much national attention or whatever, but that's not what it's all about."

Media attention or not, the show is likely to attract rock revelers from far and wide to catch the San Francisco four- piece, if buzz on the Internet and in the rock press is any indication.

Metallica fans will be traveling from all corners of the globe," says Ulrich. But it's Detroiters whoget the real treat: a dose of homegrown stuff from veteran guitarist Nugent and hot rapper Kid Rock, who performed at the sold-out Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday.

Ulrich says production details are still in the works "it will definitely be a special night," he vows but he can guarantee the Silverdome stage will host a mega-jam featuring all the artists.

"Kid Rock and Ted Nugent are on this thing because we've had relationships with both these guys," he says. "They represent different aspects ofDetroit rock ,n' roll in the last 20 years. To have both of them play with us is definitely cool."

Ulrich and Kid Rock have become tight friends since meeting in Germany last spring. While the music itself may contrast staHdy — Metallica's serious metal vs. Kid Rock's party-time rock-rap Ulrich sees similarities in the young starts passion and commitment as his success skyrockets.

"It's really admirable. His approach to life and doing business, coming in the wake of what he's going through now what we went through 10 years ago and remaining calm in the middle qfthat storm. He has this incredibly naked, almost vulnerable honesty, that he's not afraid of anything, and nothing he does is calculated. Everything is instinctive."

Our favorite bit? "..he can guarantee a mega-jam.."

LARS LIKES KID
10.23.99

Launch.com has a story about Lars and his future tourmate:

At the end of 1999 and the beginning of 2000, Metallica will hit the road with Kid Rock. The pairing may seem a little bit bizarre, but it makes perfect sense to Metallica skin-basher Lars Ulrich.

The two acts met at a few festival shows in Germany this May, when they caught up at a hotel bar and discussed their kids and music. They hit it off so well that during Metallica's set at Woodstock, the band brought Kid Rock up on stage. As to what caught Ulrich's eye about Kid Rock, he says it's the rock-rapper's balance between rebellion and caring. "If you go a little deeper into what [Kid Rock] says and so on, the sensitive aspects of what he says come across, unlike other guys who wear red baseball caps backwards," Ulrich notes. "For instance, at Woodstock, [instead of saying] 'OK everybody, throw sh-t,' he said 'throw the plastic bottles up here on stage so we don't hurt each other.' It's almost like with every kind of anarchistic move, there's also at the same time a concern."

At press time, there have been no confirmed dates announced for the Metallica/Kid Rock tour.

Features on Metallica and Limp Bizkit are available on LAUNCH.com. A transcript of an exclusive chat with Kid Rock is also available.

S&M DVD
10.23.99

The DVD File reports on the upcoming DVD release of S&M, also included is confirmation of the release date of December 14th reported here awhile ago. Here's what DVD File has to say:

The street date for that Metallica DVD has arrived. Look for the, uh, cleverly titled S&M: Metallica And The San Francisco Symphony on 12/14. It is a two-disc set with still gallery, behind-the-scenes footage and allows you to isolate either Metallica or the Symphony by themselves for the entire show. It features 21 songs including two new ones, No Leaf Clover and Human. Should be another cool Metallica disc, and retail is $34.95.

Metallica has graciously agreed to be the subject of the pilot episode, which will be potraits of two or three of the band's biggest fans, intercut with interviews with Metallica discussing their relationship with their public.

This show WILL NOT be like MTV's "Fanatic", and will NOT have a meeting between the fans and the band. They want to create a REAL show about the REAL lives of REAL rock fans. So.........

THEY ARE LOOKING FOR METALLICA FANS!

Please send them a letter or e-mail, or call them and tell them a bit about yourself - what you do, what you're like, and how Metallica impacts your life on a daily basis.

ELEKTRA PRESS RELEASE AND MISC.
10.17.99

From Elektra Records:

"It was only last April that rock's most prolific and innovative band, Metallica, drew rave reviews for their historic concert with the San Francisco Symphony. Never content to rest on their laurels, the 90's biggest selling group is closing out the millennium with a live encore collaboration in New York's Madison Square Garden, on November 23rd. The concert is in celebration of the band's same-day release of their new 20 song live disc, S&M, featuring the April 21, 22nd performances, including two new songs.

This time the group will join forces with New York City's Orchestra of St. Luke's. Most likely, it will be the last time ever that American fans will get to see and hear such classics as "Master Of Puppets," "Enter Sandman," "Until It Sleeps," and more, played in full orchestral splendor.

The renowned conductor/arranger Michael Kamen, who helmed the April event, will again join Metallica in the orchestral interpretation of their vast repertoire . The much anticipated concert has been rumored to be in the works for months. "The San Francisco event was such a great challenge and so creatively rewarding, we thought we wanted to give it another shot on the east coast," said the band's drummer, Lars Ulrich.

Since their inception in 1981, Metallica has evolved into one of rock's seminal bands, selling more than 65 million albums worldwide, with more than 40 million units sold in North America alone. The group has broken countless records, garnered numerous awards, and earned gold and/or platinum certifications in over forty countries. Their most recent studio album, Re-Load, with sales approaching 9 million, was #1 in 12 countries upon release. Their 1998 release, Garage Inc., a two CD set consisting entirely of new and old cover songs has sold more than 5 million copies, making it the biggest selling collection of B-sides in history.

Metallica first worked with Michael Kamen on "Nothing Else Matters" from 1991's Metallica album (a.k.a. the "Black" album). The producer/writer/arranger has been nominated for nine Grammys and two Academy Awards. Kamen has worked with numerous artists including Sting, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Pavarotti and many others. From Kamen's lifelong love of music came the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation. Kamen founded the non-profit organization dedicated to music education by providing new and refurbished musical instruments to schools and students across the country.

The Orchestra of St. Luke's, widely considered one of the most critically acclaimed and highly visible ensembles in New York, is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary. The Orchestra evolved from the St. Luke's Chamber ensemble, which was established in 1974. 78 members of the group will perform with Metallica at the Madison Square Garden event. The Orchestra, which currently performs its subscription series at Carnegie Hall, boasts a discography of more than 65 recordings including two Grammy award winning releases.

Ticket information will be announced at a later date. "

Also, look for new Metallica related releases on Tuesday: Primus's Antipop, featuring guests by James and Kirk, and the Woodstock '99 CD and Video, both of which feature Metallica's performance of Creeping Death.
