SAMPLED!
10.25.00

Rolling Stone reports:

"Lars Ulrich may be used to fighting the downloading debate, but not like this. U.K. anarchists Chumbawamba have sampled his band Metallica, along with other file sharing opponents Eminem, Dr. Dre and Madonna, without permission for a song that makes a bold, if legally dubious, statement, "Pass it Along [MP3 mix]."

Available on www.chumba.com, the remix version of the song, originally found on the band's What You See Is What You Get, features snippets from Metallica's "Enter Sandman," Madonna's "Justify My Love," Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady" as well as choice lines from Elvis' "Blue Suede Shoes" ("It's one for the money") and the Beatles' "Money" ("The best things in life are free"). In addition to the musicians, the song also features the voices of Lars Ulrich, Noam Chomsky and Jello Biafra.

Chris tells us: Metallica will be on MuchMusic this Saturday at at 9:00 PM (eastern) in "Much @ The Experience Music Project," Some of the world’s top acts got together to celebrate the launching of the Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington. Includes performances from Kid Rock, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Dr. Dre & Eminem, Snoop Dogg. (first aired Aug. 5/00)

From Minus Clover 84: In the Mets game on Monday, they had a huge speaker system set up along the field. The system was so loud the stadium was shaking. The announcer at the game said "Even Metallica doesn't have this big of sound system!" Also worthing noting is Mike Piazza, who was the phone in guest on the Metallica "Don't call us, we'll call you" radio special, congrats to Mike!

Sam let's us know that "Nothing Else Matters" is the song to be covered on the "chant" album that we previously mentioned!.

10.18.00

MTV reports:

"After landing a Grammy and an MTV Video Music Award for his directing work, and cranking out collectible figures of Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, Kiss, and Alice Cooper, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane is once again lining up a full slate of music-related projects.

McFarlane Toys will release a figure of '60s rock icon Janis Joplin before the end of the year, and then plans to deliver a collectible figure of Kid Rock to stores next spring. McFarlane said he is also in talks to produce figures of Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Jim Morrison, Jerry Garcia, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and Bob Marley. The toy giant also continues to pursue Korn and Jimi Hendrix, though both acts remain elusive.

If you remember, we first reported this months ago!

TICK, TICK, TICK...
10.10.00

Craig let's us know that "Lars appeared on CBS's 60 MinutesII tonight discussing Napster. Also featured was interviews with RIAA reps as well as Mr. Napster Sean Fanning himself. The interviewer seemed to be more partial to the Napster side and tried to interupt Lars when he was saying something. Needless to say, Lars wasn't gonna take that lying down. Got to hand it to Lars, he's stuck to his guns throughout this whole fiasco."

SCOTT IAN AND KIRK
10.10.00

Brendan sends us a link to the Anthrax website, where Scott Ian writes in an area called Alpha Mail. In the current edition, Scott writes about his friend, Kirk Hammett. It reads...

I hung out with Kirk (the guy in Metallica) a bit and that was rad. We don't get to see each other nearly enough. We've been friends for almost 18 years! He's one of the very very few people I've met in another band that I became real friends with. I know tons of people in other bands but it's usually just ya know, "What's up?, How are you?" I consider Kirk to be one of my best friends. It's always fun when we hang out. Last week (Sept. 26) was the anniversary of Cliff Burton getting killed. Kirk and I had a toast. It was nice. I don't think a day goes by that I don't think of him or get reminded of him in some way. He was the best.

R.I.P. Cliff.

CHANTAHOLICA
10.10.00

Metallica, Simon & Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, and Percy Sledge are among the acts that will have their music immortalized on Masters Of Chant, an album by a group of chanters who go by the name Gregorian, coming Nov. 21 on Edel America. While not actual monks, Gregorian is composed of a dozen classically trained chanters.

Thanks to Dennis of the Belgium Devildancers!

STONED
10.01.00

Within the latest Rolling Stone (October Issue 851) Random Notes Section states that during the MTV music video awards quotes Lars in regards to the Napster/Limp Biskit issues: "Me and Fred Durst hugged backstage and made up, I'm so over this Napster buisness by now.. It seems so four months ago"

Also in the same Issue was the announcement of The Faces Of Rock -The Illustrated Portraits of Rolling Stone and will include James Hetfield, painted by artist Mark Ryden

Thanks to A.

IN THE STUDIO
10.01.00

We've had numerous reports that the band is currently locked recording in North Hollywood's "One On One" Studio. As you know, this is the location that the "Black" album was recorded. We believe Metallica is NOT working on their new album here, but working on the previously mentioned "Classic Album" special for the "black" album.

Thanks to all contributing.
