MEDIA BLITZ
11.17.99

Metallica's seemingly everywhere right now with the promotional blitz behind S&M in full swing. Just about every online music source has a story or two about the upcoming "stream fest." Here's a taste:

Addict -featuring a picture of James' new Tom Waits like 'do.
CD Now: All Star
Billboard
JamTV
JamTV
Live Daily
Q
Spin
Undercover
VH 1

Most of these are just repeat info, most of which you've already read here on Inter Sandman. Also remember, tonight on VH 1 you can catch Metallica: Behind The Music at 9 PM EST, and an hour long video preview of S&M at 10 PM on Monday followed by the debut of No Leaf Clover on the Rock Show with James and Lars. You should be able to catch the new Artist Direct commercial that features the band, John Cleese and Bob Rock sometime during tonight's show or during the Rock Show's half hour!

TOUR HAZE
11.17.99

MTV.com reports on the reported tour dates:

Metallica's Tour Plans Remain Hazy

Has Metallica lined up the dates for its brief U.S. tour early next year? Well, it depends who you ask.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich recently told MTV News that the band was looking to line up eight or nine "straight-up Metallica shows" near the time of its New Year's Eve date in Detroit with Kid Rock, Sevendust, Methods of Mayhem, and Ted Nugent.

Now, the band's official Web site (at www.metallica.com) has posted an itinerary that sees the band get rolling on December 28 in Miami and December 29 in St. Petersburg, Florida and run through January 9 in Minneapolis. The site claims that the band will hit Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Chicago along the way.

A spokesperson for the band's record label, Elektra Records, told MTV News that the itinerary is not yet confirmed. Elektra went on to note that the only two confirmed Metallica dates other than the band's New Year's Eve show do not quite sync up with the schedule posted at the Web site. According to Elektra, the band will actually play Miami on December 27 at the Orange Bowl and will hit St. Petersburg's Tropicana Dome on December 28.

While it's not yet known where you can catch Metallica live in the near future, the band has firmed up plans to make its upcoming symphonic album, "S&M," available in streaming audio before the record hits stores on November 23. The band is teaming up with some 150 Web sites (including MTV.com and the aforementioned metallica.com) to make all the tracks on the entire double album available to users.

-- Robert Mancini

We have learned that the Metallica.com and MetOnTour.com dates are accurate... at least at this time are, although they have added disclaimers. If any changes pop up, we'll let you know!

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS JASON?
11.16.99

Yesterday in Milan was a special night at the Rolling Stone, which is a famous dance club in Milan, with a special guest, who was none other then Jason! Says Paolo Cattaneo, who was there, "it was a great night where he performed with a local group singing seek and destroy and creeping death...he was there for promoting the forthcoming album!" Thanks a lot Paolo!

NEW COMMERCIAL
11.16.99

Look out for a TV ad campaign from ARTISTdirect featuring Metallica AND John Cleese of Monty Python fame! They very recently did a shoot for the commercial and it apparently went well. Jerry Casale produced it (member of DEVO) and the band had a good chuckle (in good humor) by jamming Devo licks during the shoot. The commerical starts with Cleese entering the studio and saying, "They know I'm coming." Then we see the James, Lars, Kirk, and Jason, jamming away, and then being inturrupted. We then see Bob Rock, who's yelling, "Get him outta here!" Metallica starts playing really loud, and it blows Cleese away! You can see James' new hair style - very cool - as well!

Thanks to George and our friends at ArtistDIRECT.

VIDEO UPDATE
11.08.99

The Metallica Club and MTV report:

While puzzling over which track on their upcoming symphonic album was worthy of a video, the men of Metallica found an interesting answer.

The band delivered four different videos from "S&M" to MTV last week, leaving it up to the music network to decide which one to play. Performance clips of Metallica working over "Hero Of The Day", "Until It Sleeps," "Fuel," and "For Whom The Bell Tolls" with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Michael Kamen) are now making the rounds on the airwaves. The band will then premiere the video for one of two new songs on "S&M" (a song called "No Leaf Clover") on the November 22 edition of "Total Request Live."

The group took a similar tack when choosing a radio single, sending five tracks to rock radio stations across the country.

"I felt that we couldn't sit down and decide for you what you should be exposed to," Lars told MTV News last week. "I just felt wrong about that, and we felt that there were just so many different moods and elements and vibes to this whole thing that to sit down and take one song would just not be fair to the whole project or whatever."

Of course, the fact that director Wayne Isham shot the Berkeley, California concert that makes up "S&M" for an upcoming home video makes releasing a small flood of videos a lot easier.

The band plans to recreate the Berkeley show captured on "S&M" with another symphonic performance at New York's Madison Square Garden on November 23, the day the album arrives in stores.

After that, it's back to metal as usual for the band, who will play a more conventional set on New Year's Eve in Detroit on a bill that also includes Ted Nugent and Kid Rock (see "Kid Rock, Methods Of Mayhem Added To Metallica-Ted Nugent Y2K Show").

Lars said that Metallica will then play a small string of U.S. dates with Kid Rock opening up before taking a much-deserved vacation.

The MTV story include Real Audio clips from Lars and a small snippet of the Hero of the Day Video! Check it out here!

Dino Cazares of Fear Factory mentioned Kirk in a recent interview at the EMG Website. The interview was regarding Dino's use of EMG's new 707 guitar pick up used on 7-string guitars. Now, it seems Kirk will has a 7-string of his own.

Dino says: Yes, Kirk Hammett wants them for the new ESP 7-string that they're making for him. He actually called up and said "I want one like Dino"! He saw us at the Dynamo Festival - we did some shows with them in Europe.

In the same interview, Dino credits James as an influence. If we hear more of Kirk's new 7-string, we will post it here!

DAVE SAYS
11.02.99

The December 1999 edition of Guitar World magazine has an interview of former Metallica guitar player and current Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine. Dave has a couple interesting quotes:

"Metallica is a fantastic band. The people who talk shit about them are ingnoring the fact that Metallica has single handedly done thing 100 bands couldn't do."

on the internet and the whole big MP3 issue: "This is a business, and I don't want to give the material away. I think a lot of fans say, "Hey, I'm gonna do something really cool by having this song posted on my website so other people can download it. I'm cooler than everyone else cause I'm first!" If they really were fans , they'd recognize that, by posting those songs, they're constricting the flow of life into the very band they like. Bands are made up of people who have bills to pay, and they need the revenue that's generated from people purchasing their product. The internet is suicide, and I don't want anything to do with it. I don't give a shit about looking cool. I work too fucking hard for people to steal my music. It's wrong for people to post this shit, whether it's music by George Michael or Megadeth, and if you're doing it you're a dickhead.

VIDEOS UPDATE
11.01.99

The first video from S&M will premiere on MTV's Total Request Live this Friday, and will be Hero of the Day. The other 4 videos, which at this point are unknown, will premiere the following night during the one hour Metallica special, Spankin' Live New Music. Hero of the Day then, we would presume, will be the first single off of the new album. TRL airs weekdays at 3:30pm EST.

Thanks to Jon.

Confirmed by Metallica.com's new S&M area and MTV!
