VH1 AWARDS
11.30.00

Metallica performed 'Fade to Black' upon being introduced by a Metallica t-shirt clad John Leguizamo ... Metallica also won the award for Best Stage Spectacle, and lost out for Pushing the Envelope Video (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Most Entertaining Public Fued (Eminem) ...

UPDATE: Metallica also won the award for Gods of Thunder... We also received this report from Marvin, one of the lucky people who got to witness the performance firsthand:

"The Metallica Club were going to let a max of 200 Clubberz in by 5pm. But a big debaucle occurred when VH1 authorized local radio station KROQ (Metallica played at their Weenie Roast last year) and USC (the shitty school next to the shrine) to overbook to let another 300 "winners" in.

The result was Clubberz at the gate at 5 were allowed in. Then the remaining winners who were at the gate by 5pm were allowed in to fill up the remaining spots. What ended up happening was that 300 other folks had to be turned away after the 200 spots got filled - that included some late Clubberz.

Aside from that, Jason did a Meet & Greet. If you saw the stage/ audience set up on TV, I don't have to tell you it was awesome!

Before 'Tallica played Fade to Black, the boys jammed for a few minutes. First, Lars started off with a breakbeat, then Kirk joined in to do some funky strumming, then Jason joined in to do a soul-groovy thing. This lasted for about a minute or 2. Later Lars & Jason did another breif jam, same vibe as the one before.

Then the whole band played So What? - not broadcast I'm sure. Next they played Fade to Black, but I guess they were warming up/ doing a sound check. Kirk messed up - I guess b/c he wasn't taking it too seriously. They quit playing right before the song started to get heavy. Leguizamo introduced them, and then they played the entire Fade to Black.

Other people I spotted around the Metallicamp were Sebastian Bach - who was there to do some Gene Simmons movie, Jerry Cantrell, and David Alan Grier (In Living Color).

KIRK, L & GREEN DAY
11.08.00

Exceprts from Sonic Net

As a result of Web sites and technology companies setting up shop in the Bay Area, rent and real estate prices have skyrocketed. Numerous music venues have closed in the past few years, the noted Church of Saint John Coltrane was booted from its 30-year home, and the popular Downtown Rehearsal studio complex was sold to a developer in September, forcing the eviction of more than 150 bands — some 2,000 musicians.

The loss of space has led local musicians to organize events like Sunday's daylong free concert and rally, which began with a "Million Band March."

Soft-spoken Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett urged the crowd to vote Tuesday for San Francisco's Proposition L, a ballot initiative intended to limit dot-com office space.

"Being someone who came out of the San Francisco music scene, I felt that I had to get involved and do what I can to prevent the Mission [District] from being turned into some bland business district," Hammett said backstage. "It's taking small steps right now to help out all of my fellow musicians, artists and nonprofit organizations to make sure that they don't just fall by the wayside by all these dot-commers and the new dot-com economy that's taking over the city."

Hammett said he has been helping organize a benefit concert to raise money for a new non-profit that would buy and run rehearsal space.

The crowd then packed in close as Green Day took the stage. The singer stopped in the middle of one descending, swing-style crunch to make a dedication to Hammett by blasting out the intro to Metallica's "Master of Puppets."

NAPSTER TO APOLOGIZE TO MET?
11.08.00

Excerpts from CNET:

A letter from RIAA chief executive Hilary Rosen to Napster CEO Hank Barry that is making the rounds on newsgroups asks Barry--or founder Shawn Fanning--to extend an apology to Metallica and its drummer, Lars Ulrich.

In her letter to Barry, Rosen was not shy to point out the irony of Napster's recent deal with German media conglomerate Bertelsmann, noting that Ulrich has been heaped with ridicule for his outspoken criticism of Napster. On Oct. 31, Napster struck a deal with Bertelsmann to develop a paid subscription model.

Thanks to David.

SENSELESS ACTS OF METALLICA
11.05.00

A stunt from the I Disappear video will be performed on tonight's episode of MTV's Senseless Acts of Video!

KIRK SPEAKS
11.04.00

Thanks to Batman who sends us this exciting story:

"Was listening to a local (SF) radio morning show (KLLC 97.3FM) this morning (Friday, 11-03) and Kirk was on the show talking at-length about the "million band march" which is taking place this Sunday here in San Francisco. Kirk, who grew up in the Mission District of SF, explained why he is taking part in the event. He, and others putting the event together, are trying to raise awareness of rehersal studio/space being bought-out by high-tech companies and landlords.

Kirk also spoke at-length about where the band's music and sound are heading. He said something along the lines of "heavier and faster" but he didn't want to elaborate much further than that."

JAMES' NEW TATTOO
11.01.00

click for biggerJames was spotted at 49er's/Raiders game on October 8th (the Raiders won!), sporting a new tattoo. The new tattoo adorns the Mighty Het's right shoulder, we're unsure of quite exactly what it is, or what it represents.. although there does appear a figure and something flying around with bat-like wings, click the pic for a closer pic, and here's a more extreme (although blurry) close up. You should remember James has "Carpe Diem Baby" emblazened with flames and playing cards spelling out his birthday on his left arm.

Special thanks to the "one armed man."

NAPSTER MAKES DEAL
11.01.00

Napster struck a deal with the music industry giant BMG, this deal has Napster become part of the BMG "Empire." This deal will add a subscription fee (probably around $5 a month) to pay for the rights for the songs distributed over the Napster network. BMG will not drop their copyright infringement lawsuit against Napster until the new version of the service is in place, other four record labels are not, at this point, a part of this deal as it appers that BMG may be completely purchasing Napster.

Regardless of this deal, Metallica plans to carry on with their lawsuit. Metallilawyer Howard King says: "At some point in time, Napster is going to have to pay the price for the hundreds of thousands of infringements that occurred."
