Y2K THIS UPDATE
3.21.99

The Metallica Club (AOL) reports:

After a sixteen-hour drive, Metallica bassist Jason returned to his home state of Michigan to announce some very special plans for New Year's Eve. Jason teamed up with another Michigan native, guitar hero and rock legend, Ted Nugent at the Pontiac Silverdome in suburban Detroit to announce the "biggest party of the year 2000:"

Metallica in concert with Ted Nugent, New Years Eve 1999 (December 31st) at the Pontiac Silverdome. Both Jason and Ted promise a party to remember.

Of playing with Metallica Nugent says "I'm open for anything, I had a riot when we jammed at The Palace and I think we deserve each other" and adds "I think we ought to jam at midnight."

Whose idea was it to come to Detroit for the show? Ted blames Jason. Jason admits, "it came from the Metallica camp. We wanted to do a big thing, everybody wanted to do a big thing for New Years." "It's always special," Ted says on playing New Years Eve in the Detroit area. Jason adds, "what it comes right down to is that you have to pick a few places to play in North America. Say you could pick a half dozen, chances are two or three of the six will be of 300-400 miles of here" and added "people are real loyal to heavy music in this area." "Detroit's the best, no matter what," added Nugent.

There was a lot of speculation that Kiss may join the bill, to that Ted answered with a smile "Gene wishes." Jason says "at least one other band, probably two," will join the bill, but admits Kiss is unlikely. Nugent does suggest that special guests aren't out the question and that some special band-mates of his may show up, "I wouldn't be surprised if some of those guys (Damn Yankees) showed up."

Metallica hits the road in late April, with two very special shows with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in Berkeley, CA. Jason describes these shows as "104 pieces of the symphony, kind of coming to us and playing our tunes." Going on about the symphony shows he says, "we're only going to do about 8 hours of rehearsing, actually; and it's only the 4 days leading up to it, so we're hearing some tapes of some ideas and things. It's going to be different."

After the symphony shows, Metallica will tour South America and Europe.

"Metallica's not going to be in North America until towards the end of the year. This show (New Year's Eve) will be one big one in the middle of a few other ones in North America," adds Newsted. As for a new album before this show happens? "Hopefully."

Nugent will be touring North America this summer and expects a Damn Yankees album out by October. Damn Yankees, is a highly successful side project of Ted's with Night Ranger's Jack Blades and Styx's Tommy Shaw.

Jason turns to ask, "by the way, will you be riding a buffalo?" "Yes, that will be a buffalo between my legs!" answers the man who rightfully earned the nickname Motor City Madman.

General Public tickets go on sale October 23rd, 1999. Metallica Club tickets will be announced as soon as they are available.

Rehearsals for the symphony shows will start in a few weeks.

Y2K THIS!
3.19.99

Jason & Ted Nugent at the press conferenceThe Metallica Club (AOL) reports:

Rock fans looking for an antidote to any Y2K problems will be flocking to the Pontiac Silverdome this New Year's Eve.

Metallica's Jason Newsted and guitar legend Ted Nugent, both Michigan natives, announced at a press conference March 19th that Metallica and the Motor City Madman will be performing a once-in-lifetime concert on December 31, 1999. No one who has ever been a fan of hard rock can pass up the chance to ring in the new millenium in such a spectacular fashion.

"This show has a lot of sentimental value to me. I'm very proud of to be playing the biggest place in my home state on the biggest day of the century" stated Jason. "It's an honor to be on the same stage as Ted Nugent, who was one of my heroes growing up as a musician in Michigan in the '70's"

Ted seconded the notion. "For those who believe that the Year 2000 is the beginning on an era, not the end of the world, what better way to celebrate than with Metallica, the Defiant One, and his buffalo. Y2K this!"

A surprise opening artist or artists will also be announced soon.

Tickets to this millenium bash will go on-sale Saturday, October 23; Metallica Club tickets will be announced when available.

NEW SONGS FOR SYMPHONICA
3.18.99

SonicNet (AOL) reports:

The sight and sound of heavy metal rockers Metallica jamming with 104 classically trained musicians may not be the only product of the band's upcoming concerts with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.

Frontman James Hetfield said here Tuesday he and his bandmates are writing a couple of songs especially for their San Francisco-area shows, set for April 21 and 22 at the Berkeley Community Theater.

"We're really looking forward to how the two musics kind of collide and hopefully create something new," Hetfield said.

The goateed singer, whose onstage persona is one of rock's most intimidating, wore a black velvet jacket and black pants, smiling easily as he spoke backstage at Manhattan's Roseland Ballroom. He was there for the presentation of the music industry's new diamond awards.

Metallica plan to play the U.S. leg of this year's Woodstock concert, Hetfield added, which is set to take place July 23-25 in upstate New York.

The band was already slated to headline the European segment of the Woodstock fest, which is scheduled for July 16-18 in Austria. Both shows are part of Woodstock '99, which will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original festival held in Bethel, N.Y.

Steve Matrick, spokesperson for the company organizing the festival, declined to comment on Metallica's participation in the U.S. concert, but said that "theoretically, it would be quite possible" for a band to play both the U.S. and European festivals.

A spokesperson for Metallica, who declined to be named, said the band's appearance at the U.S. Woodstock is still being negotiated.

Hetfield, who was here along with bassist Jason Newsted, to accept a diamond award honoring the more than 11 million copies sold of their 1991 album Metallica, said the band was excited about the possibilities for their symphony concerts in April.

The band is preparing for the shows in collaboration with composer Michael Kamen, who orchestrated the strings for Metallica's 1991 ballad "Nothing Else Matters" (RealAudio excerpt) and who has experience working with rock musicians.

Hetfield said that Kamen is "writing out all the music for the orchestra," calling the composer "kind of the bridge between two worlds."

Kamen, who co-wrote the Bryan Adams hit "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" and has worked with such high-profile artists as Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Eric Clapton, said in January Metallica wouldn't have to compromise their essence to perform with the orchestra.

"Let Metallica be Metallica. Let the San Francisco Symphony be the San Francisco Symphony," he said. "We have more things in common than things that are different, although the differences are spectacular."

Bob Ward, a French horn player with the San Francisco Symphony, said most players were excited about the prospect of playing with Metallica.

"I think it's going to be a very interesting and unique thing. When else in my life am I ever gonna get to do this?" Ward said.

Metallica's Newsted said Tuesday the band's biggest concern for the concerts was how to incorporate their ultra-amplified sound with the much softer tones of the orchestra.

"We know they can play, and they know we can play. It's just a matter of figuring out the volume of each other," he said.

Metallica is not ready to begin work on a new studio album, Hetfield said, and instead are concentrating their writing efforts on the new songs for the concert, which he said the band will perform as long as they come together well.

"We'll see what happens," Hetfield said.

In the meantime, it seems Metallica is keeping up with current music trends -- Newsted expressed ambivalence over the current vogue for such hip-hop-influenced metal bands as Limp Bizkit and Korn.

"It depends who it is," Newsted said. "There's some good and there's a lot of fodder."

"We won't name names," Hetfield added, laughing.
