NEW STUFF
7.31.99

Sonic Net has posted several Real Player clips from Woodstock '99. Included are clips of Jason talking about playing Woodstock and about Rage Against The Machine.

More importantly we have this from James: "You can't not think about writing, that's always coming out, it's always happening. But, really looking forward to getting some new material, cause it's really has been a long time. Again, ya know, from writing all the stuff for the Load stuff to come out, it's almost four years again. So, it's time to get it out. (scary voice) Get the evil out, man, we're really looking forward to that and really, We know what we do best: play heavy stuff, and they'll be some experiments thrown in there as well."

Check out the clips here.

SAD NEWS
7.29.99

The Metallica Club has posted a message from Tony Smith:

Dear All,

Many, many thanks for your warm messages of support and sympathy on the recent death of my daughter Amanda.
To answer those who have asked, a memorial fund has been set up for those wishing to contribute. Please send donations to:

The Amanda Smith Memorial Fund
c/o St Judes Childrens Research Hospital

USA

Thanks and best wishes to all
Tony Smith

We at Inter Sandman would like to express our most heartfelt condolences to the Smith family. Our deepest sympathy's are with you in this sad time.

James dedicated Turn The Page at the Woodstock show to Amanda. Dedications have been very rare in Metallica history....

We were aware of this story, and out of respect to the family held it until we felt it was okay to do so, with Tony's message, we feel this is now acceptable. We hope other websites show the same discretion and respect for privacy in the future.

PRIMUS SAMPLER
7.27.99

Primus has posted a "sampler" MP3 for their new album called Anti-Pop. James and Kirk appear on separate tracks on this album, we're not sure if they appear on this clip that runs three minutes and 43 seconds, but we think so! James appears on the song called Eclectic Electric, the Kirk song's title is of yet unknown (although rumored to be a cover of a Bowie song!)

ARTISTDIRECT PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCED
7.18.99

ARTISTdirect, operators of the Internet's premier music vertical, today announced exclusive long-term partnerships with 44 of the world's leading music stars, including Metallica. The deal allows the artists to generate significantly increased revenues from product sales online and participate in the success of the company as equity shareholders via stock options. Says Marc Geiger, CEO/Co-founder of ARTISTdirect and a 15-year music industry veteran, "The implications of this are far-reaching. Most importantly, this marks the first time that artists have absolute control over media - they control their own web sites, online stores, images, and downloadable music - and have a direct ownership interest in the net result." According to the article from PRNewsWire, "Each artist will have a retail presence in the ARTISTdirect Network in the form of a superstore, which will offer CDs and merchandise, rarities, news, information, MP3 downloads or similar digital music files which are unavailable elsewhere. Twenty-three artist stores have already launched; others are currently in production and will roll-out on the ARTISTdirect Network through the end of the year." Says Lars, "The shortest distance between two points is a straight line...ARTISTdirect gives us a straight line of communication to our fans, and vice versa."

Also joining ARTISTdirect are such artists as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson, Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, Pink Floyd, Rage Against the Machine, Slayer, Social Distortion, System of a Down, and many more.

SOME MUSTAINE COMMENTS
7.17.99

Guitar.com featues an interesting interview with Dave Mustaine regarding his band's upcoming release, 'Risk'. Says Mustaine, when asked about the title of the CD being appropriate "since you've taken some significant chances":

"Yeah. We are heading in a much more melodic, more appealing direction. The bands that were the big four in the beginning -- Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth -- only two of us have gone onto mass commercial success. And it's one of those things where the music industry embraces you, but it also dictates a lot about what you need to do in order to remain successful. And while Metallica has been able to adapt best of all, I think we're the second best at adapting to what the industry has done and the changes that are necessary in order to continue being successful."

And then, when asked "Were you at all influenced by Metallica's evolution from thrash metal warhorses to experimental southern metal boogie-boys?" he responded:

"Maybe a little bit. The title of the record came from a comment Lars Ulrich made to the press about how he wished I would take more risks. And I said in return, ‘If you mean french kissing my guitar player, I'm not interested. Then I thought about it, and I decided that might be a good name for the record. But Lars' comment only mattered as far as considering a title. I think these songs were probably in the can long before Load and Reload ever came out. For example, the lyric to "Breadline" is about six years old." Very interesting stuff....

SLAYER ON METALLICA
7.10.99

John sent us an interesting quote from Slayer, taken from the Ozzfest website. Says lead singer and bassist Tom Araya, when asked if there were any bands that they haven't toured with or would like to tour with, he responded, "I dunno, it'd be kinda cool to tour with Metallica and Pantera. That'd be pretty heavy. A very hairy lineup. Just throwing Metallica in there makes it a big thing with them on the bill."

And just to drop an unrelated note, we'd like to mention that the site Metallica - NEM is still up.

MORE SETLIST SURPRISES

MetOnTour says, "The band just walked on stage. According to the setlist we are in for a surprise :)...Stay tuned." The band is in Dublin, Ireland, playing an indoor gig at the Point for 8500 crazy Metallica fans. We'll keep you up to date...

UPDATE: Nigel let us in on the surprise: "Whiskey in the jar was switched to second last on the bill and Eric Bell, Thin Lizzy's original guitarist and the man credited with writing parts of the song (which is a traditional Irish arrangement) joined Metallica on stage to play lead guitar for the song. The song was also dedicated by James, who said it was one of his favourite of all metallica's covers, to Phil Lynott, bass player of thin Lizzy, now sadly disceased, and to Phils mother, who was in the crowd." Thanks Nigel!

AUSTRALIA AND JAPAN UPDATE
7.4.99

Unfortunatley, I talked to the owner of the Monster Magnet tribute site today and he told me that he met with the band yesterday and they told him that Metallica will NOT be going with them to Australia nor Japan. All the dates they have listed are now headlining dates for the stoner-rockers from New Jersey.
