MN SHOW #1
Check out a review of last night's show by clicking here. NZ POLL
Recently a nation-wide radio station in New Zealand (Channel Z) had a big listeners poll for the top 19 albums of the 90's. The Black Album featured at a very respectable #11 on the countdown. No big deal you say? Well, the funny thing is that Metallica is the ONLY artist on the entire 128 place list who has not at any time been on the radio stations play list (the first and only time they ever played a Metallica song was during the countdown)! Very few stations play Metallica but they always do extremely well in the album charts... You can check out the entire list by going here. JASON SAYS...
Jason sent us this: "When talking to Jason after the chicago show about when they will tour again... Jason said that he didn't know, but definately after the new album is recorded. He said that Lars wants to tour the shit out of them and play almost everywhere for the album...Jason was asked if summer of 2001 will be when they start there tour and with a smile he said 'sounds about right'." CENTURY POLL
WRIF of Detriot did an all century rockers
poll, in which Metallica dominated. They took the top spot for Artist of the Century, James took top billing as Male Performer of the Century, Lars the top Drummer of the Century, and Kirk took home 4th place in the Guitarist of the Century category, finishing repectably behind Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page respectively. The Black Album was voted the Album of the Century, and Load finished at #11. "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters" finished #2 and #3 respectively in the Song of the Century category, behind "Stairway to Heaven." The entire list can be seen by clicking here. The results were based on votes by listeners of the station. In a separate listing, The Black Album was the #7 album in the top 101 albums of all time according to WRIF, and Load was #26, Reload #47, Ride the Ligtning #60, Justice #68, Garage Inc. #79, and Master of Puppets #87. TOP 100 GUITARISTS
Guitar.com, in a feature by Bob Gulla, has compiled their list of the all-millennium guitar squad - the top 100 players of all-time. Kirk placed at #87, behind such heavy-metal guitar gods as Tony Iommi (20), Randy Rhodes (25), Joe Satriani (45 - who has given Kirk lessons in the past), Yngwie Malmsteen (76), and Angus Young of AC/DC (82), but ahead of the likes of Adrian Smith and Dave Murray of Iron Maiden (88), Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King of Slayer (97), and Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple (??100??)... Says the article of Hammett: Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett's incredible sense of composition for a rock ensemble blew fresh breezes across the heavy rock landscape for much of the Eighties. His blistering and cutting-edge playing in tandem with partner James Hetfield formed the blueprint for much of heavy metal's last two decades. Hammett's soloing, deft, flawlessly executed, and viscerally effective, have not only made for impressive listening, but for essential learning as well. His ability to execute imaginative, tonally precise rock excursions within a drum-tight, riff-heavy framework has made him one of the most copied stylists of the modern rock generation. Thanks to Sebastian. MET ON TV
The ABC special "Totally Out of Control People," which aired Wednesday, January 6 at 9pm EST, contained a brief segment about the riots that arose in Montreal after the pyrotechnics incident with James. They put the blame on GNR and had lots of footage of the stadium during and after the riots. TRAPPED UNDER ICE
MetOnTour reports that Metallica played Trapped Under Ice in Chicago on January 5th. This is only the third time this song has been performed by the band, the last being in 1984. Mark, who was at the show, tells us: They said that they had "never" played this song and were probably going to fuck it up, but "this guy Otto kept bugging us about it, so we're going to play it." Along with "Trapped Under Ice" replacing "Phantom Lord" in the setlist, there were some other changes. "The Outlaw Torn" replaced "Bleeding Me," "The Memory Remains" replaced "2x4" and "Seek & Destroy" replaced "The Four Horsemen."
...Also reported is that Jason was amongst those announcing the nominees for this year's Grammy Awards! NUMBER #3
SoundScan, the entertainment industry's data information system which tracks point-of-purchase sales of recorded music product, has announced:
BELGIUM 2000
In Belgium there was a Top 2000 compiling of all kinds of songs...Metallica ended up with "Nothing Else Matters" taking the #12 slot, and "One" took #196. CHICAGO SHOW

M2K REVIEW
From the Detroit Free Press: The year rocks in with a heavy metal sound Read the whole story here.
Also worth noting is that Detroit's local FOX affiliate, WJBK has been reporting that the band was so impressed with the crowd at the show it is considering using footage for "the band's next album and video." M2K
Congrats to all reading this on surviving the 20th Century! Happy New Year! Metallica's last song of the 20th Century: Enter Sandman, first of the 21st: Detroit Rock City (with special guests Sevendust, Kid Rock and Ted Nugent)! The much celebrated Metallica New Years Eve gig went off just fine. There were some minor technical difficulties, but most importantly a good time was had by all! Metallica played the same setlist as the two previous shows, although there were some audio problems, most notably the intro to No Leaf Clover played one and half times before James decided he wasn't going to wait any longer and started the song. After Enter Sandman, mere minutes before the Bells were to toll Midnight, the video monitors cut to ABC Television's broadcast of the ball dropping in Times Square, as 1999 turned into 2000, a crowd rushed out onstage which included a barrage of "circus acts" and a flood of confetti and balloons from the rafters. Family and friends filled the sides of the stage and Myles mugged for the camera with his father (like father, like son). After the short celebration, James called the rest of the acts back onstage for quick jam of Kiss' Detroit Rock City, which ended with Lars and Kid Rock taking a dive at the end of the Snake Pit. This show was definitely one of those "once in a lifetime" oppurtunities, we hope as many of you as possible were able to make it. Back to current news. |
