The Detroit Free Press reported earlier this week that Lars will be auctioning off another Jean-Michel Basquiat painting - titled "Untitled (Boxer)." This one is expected to sell for about $14 million and could set a new Christie's record. Basquiat was a New York graffiti artist who died of a drug overdose in 1988. (more here)
Death Magnetic's reign atop the US charts lasted 3 weeks. The album dropped to third after being ousted by rapper TI.
More tour dates are popping up over at metallica.com; MetClub members should keep an eye on their inbox or check the site for backstage pass info.

Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Cliff Burton. Cliff was Metallica's bassist on the first three Metallica albums and a huge influence on the band's work. He was killed in a bus accident in Sweden on September 27, 1986 at the age of 24. He would have turned 46 earlier this year.
"He loved music. He was really intellectual but very to the point. He taught me a lot about attitude." - James "Cliff really exposed me and James to a whole new musical horizon." - Lars
METALLICA NOMINATED FOR THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

CLEVELAND - On Monday Metallica along with Run-D.M.C. and nine other nominees were selected for next years hall of fame class.
The other nominees selected were guitarist Jeff Beck, Bobby Womack, singer Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, War, and disco and R&B group Chic.
The five leading vote-getters will be announced in January and inducted April 4, 2009, in Cleveland.
The ceremony is usually held in New York but is being held in Cleveland for the first time in over ten years. Tickets will be made available to the public for the first time.
Metallica arrived on the heavy metal scene in March of 1982 and 25 years later they are still selling out arenas around the world. This month the Metallica released their 9th studio album, the highly anticipated "Death Magnetic," which is #1 on the Billboard Charts!
Bon Jovi and Stevie Ray Vaughn were left off the ballot after being eligible for the first time. To be nominated an act must have released its first single or album 25 years prior.
Over 500 musicians, industry professionals and journalists vote on the induction process.

We're having some server issues, we are working on them. You should be able to post comments in this thread... (and please do!).
Think of what's going on here as clipping, but for our website!
A little more on the Death Magentic audio problems from our good man, The General:
What began with fans complaining about the audio quality of lead single The Day That Never Comes has snowballed following the release of the Death Magnetic CD, which seems to mark a whole new level in the Loudness War.
Mastering engineers sacrificing dynamic range in the pursuit of louder and louder sounding CDs is nothing new, but the general consensus amongst fans and critics on hundreds of internet forums seems to be that Death Magnetic has taken this a step too far.
...and allegedly from Ted Jensen, the audio engineer who did the mastering:
I'm certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick-walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here.
Believe me I'm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else.
We do think the audio problems are there, although they may not be immediately obvious. The lack of dynamics is a detriment to the album, the distortion you hear is not always the distortion that you should be hearing.... I'd also love to be able to make out a little more the layers that are present but not real listenable due to the "brick wall;" ie, it's very difficult to hear the orchestra/keys in the Unforgiven III once the band kicks in.
"In just a three-day sales window, Metallica's "Death Magnetic" skates close to the half million mark and will lead The Billboard 200 when Nielsen SoundScan releases its charts later this morning (Sept. 17)."

Death Magnetic has made its way to the internet download sites, presumably after a French retailer sold copies of the album prematurely. Speculation was rampant that the album release would be pushed up by the band prior to the leak... so will Death Magnetic be released earlier that the September 12th Worldwide release date? We can only hope... as stated before their 9th album on the 9th day of the 9th month has a nice ring to it!
With little more than 24 hours before broadcast, Met.com has finally published the radio stations that will broadcast tomorrow's radio show.
Met Club presales have ended and various radio station presales have started.
UPDATE MAGNETICA

Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters will host a special radio program from HQ on September 4th, starting at 6 PM PDT. Check your local stations to see if they are carrying this... this sounds like it's going to be a Death Magentic preview... but, we're hoping for a lot of fun like the 'Don't Call Us..." radio special back in 1997 promoting ReLoad.
Ticket presales for MetClub members started Saturday August 30th, through Ticketmaster.
Best Buy has some Death Magnetic offers in this weekend's sales paper circulars... inlcuding a download of 11 songs from Guitar Hero. That's one more song than what's on the album, folks!
The press movement is starting to hit hard for Death Magnetic - interviews and reviews galor, please check our comments area for folks posting links to those reviews. One of the more fascinating bits was Rob Trujillo revealing that when the band widdled the tracks from 14 to 10, James was quite adamant about The Unforgiven 3 remaining - he also stated Suicide & Redemption was another James project - where James played the solos.
