DVD DELAYED?

The DVD-Audio for the self-titled "black album" appears to have been delayed. The Official Metallica site still has an announcement for a release date of February 27th, however, their store will not allow you purchase this, saying: 'Please note that one or more items were removed from your basket because the product is no longer sold.' Meanwhile, the Official Metallica Store now has a date of March 27th posted. The Official Fan Club site has nothing posted regarding the DVD at all.

PLAYBOY REVELATIONS
02.28.01

The April 2001 issue of Playboy has a startingly frank interview with Metallica. The interviews with Playboy's Rob Tannebaum were culminated separately, although quotes from the band were presented to each other for reply. The interviews were before the announced departure of Jason, although his departure is noted in the article's opening....

"I wasn't surprised that Jason Newsted quit Metallica." - author Rob Tannebaum

"A source within the Metallica camp told me Newsted is 'not 100 percent healthy, and has been playing in pain' - the bassist also told Playboy he would quit 'when the day comes that I cannot perform' with his accustomed ferocity. According the source, Newsted (who declined further comment) said he might move to Montana and not touch a bass for two years, although that's hard to imagine such inactivity from a guy who suffers anxiety attacks 'if I even try to go six days without playing music with somebody.' Newsted may have retired purely for health reasons, though the source admits that the bassist's clash with Hetfield was 'precipitating factor.'

More Playboy revelations:

  • Lars has separated from his wife.
  • Kirk was abused as a child by his father and a neighbor.
  • Cliff Burton was.. um, well endowed.
  • Kirk had a bad coke problem on AJFA tour.
  • Jason has not spoken with James in quite some time, nor have James and Lars.
  • James went to therapy around the time of Load, and has taken to drinking again, though in a more responsible manner.
Quotes from the band
Playboy: What did they do you that was disrespectful?

JN: "Turning the bass down on AJFA. Not listening to my ideas, musically."

JN: (on Mama Said) "I don't think that tasted very good to me."

JH: "Mullets Rule!"

Side Projects / Enter Echobrain
JN: "I guess our understanding is that we don't want to be like other bands, where people go off and do side projects. I have made some incredibly wonderful music with other musicians. It would just floor people - it has floored people. But I just can't release it."

Playboy: "James and Lars won't let you?"

JN: "It's not Lars."

JH: "We just disagree about side projects. Fans have always viewed Metallica as something they can rely on: We're always there, always strong. We've been the same guys since day one, essentially. The only way you can get out of this band is if you die. When you say Metallica, you know who that is: Lars, James, Kirk and - uh, what's that guy? Jason (laughs). When someone does a side project it takes away from the strength of Metallica. So there is a little ugliness lately. And it shouldn't be discussed in the press."

JN: "James Hetfield is the heart and soul and pride of Metallica, the protector of the name. I'm not out to disrespect him.

Playboy: But he could respect you by letting you release the album?

JN: "We're getting really close to some things we shouldn't be talking about. I would like him to see that this music is truly a part of me, like his child is a part of him."

Playboy: What did James say when you told him that you wanted to release the album?

JN: "I won't go there. We have to change the subject."

JH: "Where would it end? Does he start touring with it? Does he sell t-shirts? Is it his band? Thats the part I don't like. It's like cheating on your wife in a way. Married to each other."

The band on Jason's material (we're guessing Echobrain):
KH: It's a great album.

LU: It's a nice record, very bluesy, like a poppier version of Stevie Ray Vaughn's stuff.

JH:: It's respectable.

On James' various appearances as a guest (COC, South Park):
JN: "I can't play my shit, but he can go play with other people."

JH: "My name is not on those records. And I'm not out trying to sell them."

In closing, we leave you with this quote:
JH: "I don't mind being looked at as the asshole in the band. Well, within the band. As long as the fans think Lars is the asshole, that's fine.

More to come...

TREMONTI ON METALLICA
02.28.01

The April 2001 issue of Guitar World magazine features Creed guitarist on the cover and an interview. What does the winner of the magazine's 'Best Rock Guitarist' have to say about Metallica?

I met James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett at the Whiskey Bar in Los Angeles. Ed Kowalczyk of Live introduced me to James. I didn't know what to say. It was one of those moments. I can talk about anything to anyone on the planet, but Hetfield and anyone from Metallica are different. I felt like a seventh grader again. We talked about King Diamond and remember waking up the next day thinking, What did I say to Hetfield? I must have seemed like a little groupie."

"..They're my favorite band ever. It's that simple. They've worked hard. They're everywhere. They've kept it real and done whatever they wanted because they have diehard fans that will be there forever. I'll be there forever for them."

"..when you ask what I play when I'm noodling around at home, I'm playing Metallica."

Pick up the magazine for more cool quotes from Mark on Metallica (and of course about his band!), as well as Kirk Hammett's monthly 'The Sound & The Fury' guitar column!

PLAYBOYS
02.27.01

Stephen writes us about the Metallica interview in Playboy:

"All 4 guys are interviewed separately and it is laced with some harsh comments between James, Jason, and Lars. It gives even more insight for Jason's departure. After reading it, I have a new opinion of James and it's not a good one.

"* Take note on Kirk's comment regarding James' stance on the whole thing."

GUITAR WORLD

Kirk was named MVP in the latest issue of Guitar World magazine in one of their polls, and came in second for 'heavy metal' guitarist... In the same feature, which includes an interview with Mark Tremonti of Creed, Tremonti has some good quotes about his meeting of James and Kirk...more to come soon!

NAPSTER LOSES AGAIN
02.12.01
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled that Napster must stop trading in copyrighted material and may be held liable for 'vicarious copyright infringement' when it fails to patrol its system.

UPDATE: More from Associated Press:

A federal appeals court ruled Monday that the music-swapping service Napster must stop trading in copyrighted material and may be held liable for "vicarious copyright infringement."

Napster must prevent users from gaining access to copyrighted content through its lists of songs archived by the service's users, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said. Napster officials have said such a ruling could force them to shut down the service.

In a 58-page opinion, a three-judge panel told a lower court judge to rewrite her injunction to focus more narrowly on the copyrighted material. The panel also directed the Redwood City-based company to remove links to users trading copyrighted songs stored as MP3 files.

"This is a clear victory. The court of appeals found that the injunction is not only warranted, but required. And it ruled in our favor on every legal issue presented," said Hilary Rosen, president and chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America.

Napster can stay in business until U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel retools her injunction, which the appellate court called overly broad.

UPDATE: Allstar has posted the following statement from Metallica:

"From day one, our fight has always been to protect the rights of artists who chose not to have their music exploited without consent. The court's decision validates this right and confirms that Napster was wrong in taking not only Metallica's music but other artists who do not want to be a part of the Napster system and exploiting it without their approval.

We are delighted that the court has upheld the rights of all artists to protect and control their creative efforts. The 9th Circuit Court has confirmed that musicians, songwriters, filmmakers, authors, visual artists, and other members of the creative community are entitled to the same copyright protections online that they traditionally been afforded offline.

We have never objected to the technology, the Internet, or the digital distribution of music. All we have ever asked is that artists be able to control how, when, and in what form their creativity is distributed through these channels. This is something that Napster has continually refused to do. Now the court has made that decision for them.

WE STILL WANT A TONY SMITH DOLL!
02.12.01

The Metallica figures were unveiled yesterday at the Toy Fair in NY. The figures, made by Todd McFarlane of Spawn fame will come in a boxed set featuring James, Lars, Kirk and Jason as well as a stage back drop, with drums and guitars all circa the Damaged Justice era. The figures and stage are extremely detailed, down to the "SO WHAT!" and ESP logo on James' guitar. No release date has been announced yet. You can even buy a Kid "Bobby" Rock figure to keep Lars company!

The image on the left is the James figure, which we've been given permission to post! Check out the rest at Spawn.com's Metallica page for two pages worth of pictures that expand.

MISC.ALLICA
02.12.01

Today is the day that a great portion of the Napster debate should come to an end. The three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco will issue its ruling today. You may remember an appeal was filed allowing Napster to stay online in October, after being ordered to be shut down by U.S. District Court Judge Marilyn Hall Patel.

Former US Senator and Presidential candidate, Bob Dole, has joined the fight against Napster. The RIAA has hired him as an adviser the case against Napster.

You can vote at VH1's Rock Show's for Metallica's new bass player! While the 'contestants' probably have little shot at joining Metallica, VH1 will let you voice your choice of the following: Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister, Primus' Les Claypool, Red Hot Chili Pepper's Flea, Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler or Megadeth's Dave Ellefson! Thanks to Jonathon!

Systematic -the band from Lars' TRC that the drummer is very excited about- has been added to Godsmack's new tour, with Staind and Cold also opening. Thanks to Bradd

97.7 Hits FM in Toronto are having Metallica Mondays. Every Monday, on every hour of the day a Metallica song -official, live or bootleg- will be played! The site also reviewed the former Metallica Shrine website! Thanks to Chris!
