"A DVD, which literally means Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disc, looks like the normal CD that has been in use for over a decade, BUT has a much larger storage capacity and therefore capable of much higher quality.  

DVD is still a relatively new format, although it has support from most major companies in the music, computer and movie industry (yes, it is that versatile!)  It's a pretty safe bet that the new Metallica DVD will be one of the most ground breaking events for the music/DVD industry.

Ok, so what's that mean to Metallica viewers?

...state of the art digital video!
...digital audio with sound superior to a CD (up to 8 tracks of Dolby 5.1 available!)
...subtitle tracks available, you may be able sing along in you favorite language!
...follow the band from nine camera angles that may be available, rumored to be included is "follow the band member," meaning you might be able to watch one band member throughout the entire show!
...skip that song, or solo you don't want to hear and go directly to the next song, no more playing around with fast forward or rewind, go directly to the song, time or chapter you want straight from a menu!
...you'll be able to watch the whole show on one disc, no switching tapes or switching sides!
...the DVD will last longer!!  Unlike tape, the quality will remain the first time you watch and the 300th time you watch it, and DVD will last longer!

The actual extent of the DVD the band will release still isn't completely firmed up, it is believed to support many of the features mentioned above!

The DVD industry is still growing, more and more titles and features are added all the time... and luckily many of them are adding features like the one's the band is utilizing.  Hopefully, in the future that will mean the release of the previous Metallica home video's in this format.
