METALLICA TO
HEADLINE EURO-WOODSTOCK
Metallica will be headlining the first of two Woodstock commemorative concerts to be held July 16-18 in Wiener-Neustadt in Austria. The event will be the Continent's largest-ever rock fest, featuring over 100 acts playing on two main stages. 250,000 are expected to visit the site, which will include four performance zones designed to accommodate a broad spectrum of entertainment. Among the amenities planned are movie theaters, art exhibitions, skateboard ramps, climbing walls, cyber zones, and chill-out areas. The European concert's roster will have a decidedly international focus, including a diverse line up of international groups. A week later, a second Woodstock 99 concert will occur in Saugerties, NY. The performers for that event, to run from July 23-25, have yet to be determined. Both Woodstock 99 dates will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the legendary fest that took place on Yasgur's Farm in Bethel, N.Y and both concerts will also involve promoter Michael Lang, co-founder of the 1969 event and organizer of the 1994 sequel, which Metallica played at. NO CALL OF
MUSTAINE
Megadeth will NOT be recording a new version of 'Call of Ktulu', as previously reported by various news sources and Metallica pages. Dave Mustaine had said that they were recording something similar to the song that sounded like it, but this was taken and blown way out of proportion. CUNNING DVD
#1 FOR '98
The Metallica DVD for Cunning Stunts was the best selling Music Video DVD for all of 1998. Somewhat amazing, as this DVD was only released on December 8th and available for 23 days of the year. More amazing is that Cunning Stunts attained that status in its first week of release alone.
METALLICA TO
SUE VICTORIA'S SECRET
Metallica filed a
lawsuit in the California Western Division of United States District Court
on Thursday (Jan. 14) against Victoria's Secret and Victoria's Secret Catalogue,
citing trademark infringement, false designation of origin, unfair competition,
and dilution. The lawsuit reads, in part, "Victoria's Secret manufactures
and sells lip pencils bearing the mark Metallica. The packaging for Victoria's
Secret's Metallica lip pencils also bear the mark Metallica. These lip
pencils continue to be sold by Victoria's Secret throughout the United
States. Representatives for Metallica will serve the lawsuit through certified
mail on Tuesday (Jan. 19).

METALLICA ON
ROCKLINE
Metallica will make yet another appearance on the syndicated radio program, Rockline. The program invites listeners to talk with rock stars and is broadcast on Monday and Wednesday. Metallica will appear on a Monday night edition in February of 1999. For more info and a station near you, check out the unofficial Rockline website.
GERMANY IN
MAY
Metallica will be playing the Rock IM Park Festival in Germany, which is goes from May 21-23, 1999. Apparently, Rock AM Ring is one of the biggest festivals in Germany, and a few years ago, it simply got too big... So the organizers split the 'original' Rock AM Ring to Rock AM Ring and Rock IM Park. Now it always works like this - both festivals last for 3 days and the bands that are playing "Park" one day are playing "Ring" another day and so on...But the two festivals together are still known as Rock AM Ring, simply because it was the original name. More info at http://www.mlk.com/core/rarrip.html Very special thanks

Garage Inc. was nominated # 1 in this weeks Rolling Stone Readers Top
20. The first single from the album, "Turn the Page", also maintained
it's #1 position up top the Mainstream Rock Singles category. In Billboards
charts, the album still is pulling strong at # 11 (Billboard stats are
from when the album was 4 weeks old, currently it is in it's sixth week),
down one from the previous week, but still not too shabby for an album
comprised completely of cover material.
METALLICA SIGHTING
According to a certain radio station, last week Metallica attended the Black Sabbath concert in San Jose, CA on January 8 at the San Jose Arena. They were watching the show from the soundboard area and apparently smoking cigars, even though the building is smoke free. No word on if they were invited guests or not :) Thanks to yeagstr@aol.com

PRESS CONFERENCE
TRANSCRIPT & PICS
Rocklove.com has
posted a complete transcript
with pictures of January 6th's press conference detailing the "Symphonica"
shows.
PRESS CONFERENCE DETAILS 1.7.99 Metallica was at Davies Symphony Hall yesterday to unveil the details of its upcoming gig with the San Francisco Symphony. At a packed news conference in the concert hall's Green Room, the boys joined composer Michael Kamen to make the expected announcement they will perform with the Symphony for two shows on April 21 and 22 at the Berkeley Community Theater. "The orchestra and Metallica will share the stage to perform some 23 songs from the band's repertoire, including "Enter Sandman,'' "Devil's Dance," "Fight Fire With Fire,'' "Hero of the Day,'' "Call of the Ktulu," and "Nothing Else Matters." Metallica and Kamen will adapt the band's music for the orchestra performance. Kamen, a Grammy- winning composer who has worked with musicians as diverse as Kate Bush and Aerosmith, suggested the project to the band more than a year ago. Hammett stressed that the music wouldn't be toned down for its Symphony premiere. ``This isn't an easy-listening version . . . or Metallica unplugged, re- plugged or de-plugged. This is full-on amplification. We'll need it to be heard over the orchestra.'' Kamen, who was once a rock composer and sports longer hair than the members of Metallica, said he found the band's music ``Brahmsian and Wagnerian.'' The Symphony has teamed with rockers before, including the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, but this is its first venture into heavy metal. And beyond Hetfield's interest in Bach and classic rock, it's Metallica's maiden foray into live classical orchestration. Kamen said he hoped the shows would draw an audience from both sides of the classical-metal divide. ``The idea is to let Metallica be Metallica and the Symphony be the Symphony. They really have more in common than not.'' ``For many years, we've tried to push ourselves into new directions as a band,'' Ulrich said. ``This is a logical step for us, and we hope our fans will agree.'' What does this mean for the dress code? ``Wear what's in your closet,'' Ulrich said. ``Probably the Symphony will be in black tie, and we'll be in black leather.'' Asked if the performances would feature the band's usual elaborate staging and light shows, Hetfield suggested ``a flaming violinist -- or maybe we'll start a mosh pit in the orchestra pit.'' Symphony musicians attending the conference roared enthusiastically. (For the record: There will be a light show, sans the flaming fiddler. No word yet on whether the string section will stage-dive.)" Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Sunday. Details: METALLICA AND THE S.F. SYMPHONY will perform at 8 p.m. April 21 and April 22 at the Berkeley Community Theater. Tickets: $40. Call (415) 478-BASS or (510) 762-BASS. Click here for a pic of the boys and Kamen from the press conference. Just remember, IS was the first to let you about this project over a month ago! A very special thanks to the San Francisco Chronicle, whose story this basically is, as well as bmrist@sfsu.edu for the lead on it.

DVD RESOURCE'S
TOP DVD'S
DVD Recource named their top DVD's for 1998 including... "Metallica: Cunning Stunts will certainly not be everyone's cup'o'tea musically, but as a DVD, it impresses. On top of the ear-blistering Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, this two-disc live concert set pushes the DVD envelope by including three songs filmed and presented with multiple angles. The 5.1 mix on the intro to One is as impressive as I have ever heard. There is ample behind-the-scenes interview footage, almost a thousand still photos (autoplaying and set to music), and one very cunning stunt. From Elektra Entertainment and Warner Home Video. on the US charts at #2, Garth Brooks continues to hold the #1 slot after
smashing the record for most albums sold in a debut week. Garage Inc. sold
426,000 copies its debut week, not bad for a double CD with no original
songs and very little promotion.
1999 PLANS 12.05.98 This spring Metallica will launch another world tour in late April.. the first show will be a concert featuring a full orchestra in San Francisco. The will coincide with an album of Metallica songs featuring orchestra. The band will then carry the tour (minus orchestra) to South America, Europe and possibly some North American dates (including the postponed Hawaii, Alaska and Mexico City dates). The band also hopes to start recording a new album before the year 2000, probably in late 1999. To welcome the year 2000 the band plans a New Years Eve Party in Michigan, probably at the Pontiac Silverdome. Look for Ted Nugent on the bill. Jason says: "Yeah, there'll be a big show on New Year's Eve, with big pyrotechnics and stuff,'' "we're gonna blow a hole right out of the center of Michigan.'' Source: Gary Graff
