CHARTS
12.10.99

This week on the Billboard Charts: S&M, the album, drops to #11 on this weeks Billboard charts, S&M, the video sits at at #6... and S&M is the #3 in terms on internet sales. No Leaf Clover is the #3 Mainstream Rock track, and the black album is #19 on Pop Catalog sales.

YOUR MISSION...
12.08.99

Sonic Net has a report on the new song Metallica has worked up for M:I-2.

Jason says: "It's about two and a half days old, everybody's still trying to get the feel of it. There's two different versions of it; we're trying to figure out exactly what way we want to go with it." he also says that it isn't that different than the norm for Metallica... "I don't think overall there's much difference in our formula. Basically, James finds some kind of cool riff in the tapes and builds on it, and Lars talks about arrangement, and then we put in a little thump and try to make some magic out of it, and that's that. So we're going at it the same way we always have, just like the Garage record or the Metallica album or whatever."

This seems to confirm a whole, new song for the M:I-2 soundtrack... not re-working of the Mission Impossible theme music, although this is still very speculative, and it is known that the trailer music is by "BT" (although may include Metallica bits?). This story also confirms that James' wife is pregnant with their second child, due in May.

Read the whole thing here.

CONGRATZ TO JAYMZ.. #2 ON THE WAY
12.08.99

We've learned Francesca is expecting another child. Congratz to Mr. and Mrs. Hetfield!

BILLBORED
12.08.99

Yes, we sat through the Billboard Awards... Metallica performed 'Until It Sleeps' with Maestro Kamen.. live from the Rio. Lars was spotted at the Rio yesterday (on the 50th floor!). 'Sleeps' was performed with the band totally encircled by the symphony and without any seen audience. James and Lars presented the final award of the evening... for Best Artist of the Year to the Backstreet Boys. It was quite interesting to see those two factions on stage together, and it was James whom seemed at ease and very comical in his introductions ("And the winner is... US! See ya...").

The Billboard Awards are based solely on SALES. ..And Metallica walked off with the already announced "Pop Catalog Artist/Album." Congrats!

UPDATE: Metallica's performance was originally slated for the roof of the MGM Grand Garden was changed to the Rio because of the Vegas area being too windy.

ADDICTED?
12.08.99

Addict has a feature on Metallica.. mostly on the whole Symphonica experience. Check it out here.

Thanks to Seb.

KERRANG!
12.08.99

James talked to Kerrang recently.. here's some exceprts:

Kerrang!: These days, a lot of fans think of you and Jason as the soul of the band, Kirk as the eccentric and Lars as a bit of tit. Are you aware of that?

James:Ha ha ha! Poor little Lars. His humour is definitely hard to get sometimes. I think we all bring different things ti the table - even if it's just an attitude, like with Lars. Well, so be it. I'm not his dad. He can do what he wants - we're fully grown men. Kirk is absolutely eccentric, there's no doubt about it, and he loves it.It actually took him quite a while to realise it and come out of his shell a bit, but now that's just totaly him. But as far as being the soul of the band goes, I don't really want to carry the weight. I just there's maybe a little more street in me and Jason, and we don't want to do anything too fancy.

Kerrang!: Are you aware of the obsession that peopple have with your hair?

James:Oh yeah, it's kind of a fun thing to fuck with actually. That and facial hair. Would I grow back the mullet? I don't think there's any need for that, is there? You look back at old pictures and you go, 'Fuck me man!! That looks ridiculous.'

Kerrang!: Who is your best friend?

James: You know, when it all comes down, at the end of the day it would have to be Lars. No doubt about it.

Kerrang!: What does the future hold for the band and how long can you last?

James: Well musically I just want to keep doing what we're doing. Every musical idea I've come up with has fitted in with the Metallica set-up. Certain things have happened that were other people's idea - like the 'Load' photo session, for instance, that maybe weren't great! But there's no solo project or anything like that. And as long as were all happy, as long as we're enjoynig making shit togheter we'll go on. There's no point arguing over something stupid and breaking the band up, ypu know. If it stars to gettin' shitty, then it's time to give up, but it would be extremely hard to do that. We're not going away

A huge shout out and thanks to Luka!

STORY UPDATES
12.07.99

Rolling Stone reports:

"For their Wednesday night Billboard Music Awards appearance, METALLICA will play on the rooftop of Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena, with MICHAEL KAMEN at the helm of a yet unnamed symphony. The band spent the weekend at Northern California's Plant studio recording the theme song to Mission Impossible II with producer BOB ROCK. But all work and no play makes for dull metallurgists, so, according to insiders, the band spent some studio time hanging with the movie's star, TOM CRUISE ..."

HOWARD LOVES METALLICA
12.07.99

According to Dan:

"Shock jock Howard Stern was in attendance for the MSG show Nov. 24. He spoke highly of Metallica for about fifteen minutes on monday morning. "It was the best concert I've ever seen!... and I've seen alot of concerts... It was even better than Led Zeppelin at the garden... Those guys are incredible. They play their guitars like they're a part of their body" He also complimented them on their live version of The Memory Remains. He said the crowd was going crazy during the Marianne Faithful part of the song. Then he played the studio version of it and sang along with the na na na na na... part. By the way Stern pronounced James' last name Hatfield!!"

NEM SINGLE INFO
12.07.99

Luko sent us this info regarding the NEM single released in Europe:

"On the cover there's the photo that you can find on the back of the booklet. The enhanced part of the cd is cool, it features the video live in S.F and there's an S&M part where you find a pix of the cover and the tracklist.

Pics to come!

M:I-2
12.05.99

We've received e-mail from many of you asking about the music on the M:I-2 (aka Mission Impossible 2) trailer that's making the rounds. We can tell you that this is said to be by Brian Transeau, also known as "BT" (pronounced "Beat")... the movie music is by Hans Zimmer. (It is worth noting that BT has extensive history as a remixer). It was reported months ago on IS that Metallica may pop up on the soundtrack.

UNTIL VEGAS SLEEPS
12.05.99

CHARTS REVISITED
12.03.99

We at Inter Sandman have something we think is a bit interesting... or at least adds to the chart questions. S&M was released simultaneous on CD and video... we're wondering how many units the video sold... and how many people opted for the video as it was the approximate same price as the CD with basically the same material?

UPDATE: Also a reminder that this indeed a DOUBLE album as well as a LIVE album... which doesn't make it quite an appealing purchase to many folks.
