Press release:

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 1999--Electronic Arts(tm), the world's largest interactive entertainment software company, today announced it has shipped Hot Wheels(R) Turbo Racing for the PlayStation(R) and will begin shipping the Nintendo(R) 64 version in late September.

Hot Wheels Turbo Racing allows players to get behind the wheel of one of their favorite classic Hot Wheels(R) cars and experience the rush of high-speed stunt-racing action. Hot Wheels Turbo Racing marks the first time Mattel's signature toy line will be available to the console game market.

"The Hot Wheels Turbo Racing team developed this title to be fun and exciting for gamers," said Michael Pole, vice president, executive in charge of production at Electronic Arts. "The nostalgia of Hot Wheels and the chance to get behind the wheel of a Hot Wheels car appeals to those over 18 and the hip, edgy racing and stunt action of the game appeals to those under 18. Hot Wheels Turbo Racing is truly a fun title for all ages."

More than 40 of the most popular Hot Wheels cars are available for players to race and discover. The game allows players to compete head-to-head in two-player mode, as well as an innovative airtime challenge mode. Players will compete in the airtime challenge mode by completing mid-air barrel rolls, helicopter spins and a multitude of other mid-air tricks in the track's half pipes. The development team added even more adrenaline to the Hot Wheels Turbo Racing experience with a soundtrack that features previously unreleased or original music from well-known artists including Primus, Meat Beat Manifesto, Mix Master Mike and Reverend Horton Heat. GET YOUR HAIR DONE LIKE KIRK'S
8.24.99

San Francisco's Phoenix Hotel, known for its kitschy motel style and leggy list of celebrity guests, has begun offering the on-call services of noted rock n' roll hairstylist, Dale Martin. "Because we cater to rock n' roll bands on the road, this is the kind of hotel service our particular crowd is clamoring for. Overnight shoeshine service is low on their list of priorities, but a quick spiking or streaking before a show can a be a matter of extreme urgency. It's like room service for your hair," says Hotel General Manager, Monika Bernstein.

Dale Martin works at San Francisco's ultra-trendy Claude Nine Salon, whose clients include model Christy Turlington and Kirk Hammett of Metallica. He specializes in cutting for the fashion and music industry and is known for creating cutting-edge looks with rock star attitude.

Guests of the Phoenix make their hair care arrangements through the hotels front desk. The service costs $65 per hour, plus a $25 "delivery charge."

The Phoenix Hotel is located at 601 Eddy St., San Francisco, CA 94109. The telephone number is 415-776-1380 or 800-248-9466. For further information contact Rob Delamater at 415-248-5942.

SONIC NET REPORTS ON SYMPHONICA
8.3.99

Sonic Net has a lengthy article discussing the upcoming Symphony CD, excerpts:

Metallica are preparing to enter a California recording studio to begin editing a live two-CD set — including two new songs — that will chronicle their April symphonic-metal experiment with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.

"As far as incorporating any symphony into our new recordings, that was a fun challenge," said Hetfield, speaking backstage at Woodstock '99. "It was a fun thing to try and do. I never say never. But I don't feel we're going to get 75 musicians into a studio and pop off a little song or two".

The still-untitled symphonic set, also to be available on DVD and video, will be derived from tapes of the band's two-night stand (April 21-22) at the Berkeley Community Theater.

"A couple weeks into August, we'll get in there and start working on it," Hetfield said, predicting that the live album would be out in November. A spokesperson for the band's label, Elektra Records, said a release date has not yet been set for the album and video project.

"We put together two brand new Metallica songs especially for those shows," Hetfield said. "They're very Metallica, not written for the orchestra. We just wanted to make it special with a couple new songs".

"We've always been into experimenting with things," (Jason Newsted) the bassist said. "But you know there's a lot of new bands experimenting with new sounds and technology, [and] it's only going to help your sound. ... I always try to take on new influences, but don't ever get too far away from the original influences".

Once the sessions for the symphonic set are completed, Hetfield said the group will be eager to get back into the studio to record the follow-up to the 1996 album Load and its 1997 sequel Re-Load.

Newsted said it would not be out of the question for the meat-and-potatoes rockers to try their hand at using samples. "We shouldn't have too many rules in the studio the next time," he said. "We really try to keep open about some crazy ideas ... like James playing drums."

Metallica will finish out the year with a half-dozen live dates, culminating with a New Year's Eve show at the 80,000-capacity Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich. The Dec. 31 concert will also feature guitarist Ted Nugent and rap-rock MC Kid Rock as opening acts.
