The first show of four 30th Anniversary Shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco brought a few surprises…
The live debut of Carpe Diem, Baby and the overall debut of Hate Train.
Hate Train is from the Death Magnetic sessions and has also been known as ‘Game.’ You might recognize parts of it from Mission: Metallica (which chronicled the making of Death Magnetic). MetClub members got a surprise in their e-mail with a free download of the studio version of the song (This is the unpolished version of the song… the original rough mix from March of 2008 in its rawest, untouched form.)
This first Fillmore gig was opened by Apocaplyptica and the Soul Rebel Brass Band. Both bands joined for a big jam on Seek to close the evening… Apocolyptica also joined Metallica onstage to play One (starting with just James/Apocalyptica with the rest of Metallica joining at the end). Other guests including former roadie/fill in John Marshal, Bill Byford of Saxon, Diamond Head… and the return of Jason Newsted!!
Rumors are still flying around on what the remaining three gigs will bring us: Mustaine, McGoveny, Ozzy, Lemmy… more Death Magnetic era songs? Fixxxer? Frayed Ends?

I’m thinking we might get an unreleased track at all four shows, isn’t there supposed to be four unreleased from Death Magnetic, and four Fillmore shows? Let’s hope.
I’ve let Hate Train sink in a bit… it’s hard to digest a new song on just a listen or two.
Like a lot of Death Magnetic stuff the first few listens just seemed choppy… almost like the copied and pasted riffs together; the song also seems like they’re trying to rush through it.
There are some stellar riffs there, but the main verse riff is just too close to Fuel (even a littel Judas Kiss). The lead guitar is probably the best lead we’ve heard from Kirk in a long time. The only thing close to sounding this good is Suicide & Redemption… other than that, some mighty tasty lead guitar.
I love the clean parts of the chorus… to me, that’s bit of what is missing from DM – the heavy/clean guitar interplay. …this song is also another shining example of Rick Rubin’s misguidance about not using harmony vocals… just think it would’ve sounded much more powerful with some harmony vocals there.
There’s just a lot of stuff jammed into this 7 minutes… some really cool moments, but overall I can see why it was left of DM.
But, ya know? It’s still a very cool song. It’s new Metallica that we don’t have to wait another year or two for.
Gig sounded fucking awesome. AND Hate Train is a kick ass song! Wow. Now once the pre-Kill em All line up reunites and plays Phantom Lord/Jump in the Fire/Hit the Lights at the next show or last show, i’m gonna revert back to my super fanboy days and have a metalgasm.
I agree with JD now that I’ve had a day to ride the Hate Train. It just takes awhile to digest all the riffs. Song is heavy as hell. Even what didn’t make it onto Death Magnetic is a heavyweight compared to Load/Reload/Anger. This song really has some teeth. Can’t wait for the next full album, I really don’t think we’ll be disappointed. And Hate Train was the perfect thing to do on the heels of Lulu, to remind everyone that Metallica is still Metallica.
Really? On Load(s)? Yeah, there’s heavy stuff on St. Anger but the production sucks the fun out of it. I’m just glad they’re back to heavy with good production values, whether there’s more heaviosity here or there doesn’t really matter anyway.
I was thinking if you were to insert Hate Train into Death Magnetic, what would you replace? My vote would be EOTL. They seem similar to me, both kind of chugging rockers, #2 type Met tracks. I prefer Hate train to EOTL, I like both, but would’ve replaced EOTL with this. I think it would’ve fit fine in the album at that spot.
Damn JD, worst ever. I admit, as time has passed I have enjoyed EOTL increasingly less, but I sure have plenty of met tunes I like less(1/2 of reload, mama said, shoot me again, jump in the fire).
I like the last 1/2 of Hate Train better and think it would have been fine tuned a bit more had it made the record. Then it well could have made a better track2. But worst ever….wow.
Really dig how Hate Train finishes–how they go out blazing under the "Still I Stand" bit that was the quiet/clean passage the first two times. Kinda reminds me of "I Dissappear"–same dynamic.
You’re not the only one, JD. Shoot Me Again is one of the only songs on St. Anger that I think are worthy of a Metallica album. I think that there was a lot of unfulfilled potential there. And as much as an ear sore as the snare could be, there are a few spots where it does sound cool, mostly the fast parts, like in Some Kind of Monster.
On another note, I can’t wait to find out if they played another unreleased song tonight!
Seriously EET this is a fun week. I wake up and grab my laptop instantly to see what you guys have to say and see if any new videos are up on YouTube lol. So far I haven’t been disappointed, LOTS of awesome vids up on YouTube from these shows now. Rob playing Anesthesia was a highlight for me, great tribute to Cliff there!
Oh, and don’t get me wrong, I love Rob Trujillo, but hearing Jason back on Creeping Death was fantastic. DIE DIE DIE! Miss those vocals…"You’re too fucking metal!"
Manguy, I would say there’s a good chance of that. Rob has been talking about wanting to play Frayed ends frequently.
I definitely like Shine more than Hate Train(although I’ve only heard it once so far).
Have any of you gotten that email with a link to the songs from the fan club(as it was said on blabbermouth anyways)? I am a member and I haven’t gotten shit so far.
I expected Shine to be more ballad like. The Mission Metallica stuff just made it seem much more epic. I expected more clean guitar parts (and more of tha tele?) and a few more soft bits (what happened to the line ‘Let my dark shine’?
It’s a good song – probably better than Hate Train in my book… just not what I expected.
And the live version of Just a Bullet Away is just spectacular. Blows the studio (youttube) version away… not even close.
Maybe it’s something else new we will get. I emailed the metclub and got no response, so I went over to JITF and found links for both tunes, which I have now burned and will be cranking on the way home. Repeated listens does them justice(well, I liked bullet right off, but hate train has grown some).
JITF is a site with all kinda metallica(and others) bootlegs. legal and i suppose illegal(livemet ones). I’ll post the site address if you want, or google jitf bootleg mafia.
I like both Hate Train and Just a Bullet Away, although I can’t say for sure that I would replace a song off of DM with one of them. More than anything I’m just glad they played/released them.
I’m loving what we’ve seen with these shows so far, including that they played three songs with Lou Reed. I’m curious to see what other guests show up, especially Mustaine.
As for songs? Any other unreleased stuff would be great as well as just about anything they haven’t played. For me, though, the two big "White Whales" so to speak from a live standpoint are Frayed Ends and Fixxer.
Is there 1 more or 2 more unheard songs from Death Magnetic? We may be hours away from hearing one more new song! Both songs are great, but Just A Bullet Away is a bit more badass. It makes my face do the same thing that Harvester of Sorrow makes my face do.
JD, I think what you posted is Shine, and we had all just assumed that Bullet was called Shine because we knew that title. Fun to see this going on.
And you’re still wrong about EOTL. 😉
I know Escape is one of the unplayed songs waiting for debut, but I really hope it stays that way. I’ve always hated that one.
I hope we hear Hellbound TONIGHT! I am with you JD, the more I hear them, the more I like them. I am leaning a little bit more towards Bullet right now… That song is just so solid and it flows better. I REALLY hope that one gets airplay. Strong groove. I love the how James sings "Even the promise of danger has gone DULL". The melodic interlude/bridge is brilliant. James sings "Stop the voices in my head", you get complete silence as if the voices all stopped, then a slow sweet melody that builds into a crescendo. Its simply the way it was meant to be.
We won’t here it tonight, Ash… they’re not playing. Have to wait until Friday night or Saturday night.
There’s a lot of amazing parts in the new songs. I just wish it were a bit more…um, finished (?). I can only imagine what Bob Rock might’ve done with these songs.
Ok, let’s say that there really is only one other unreleased Beyond Magnetic song, what then? There are only two other unfinished studio songs that I’m aware… both from the Cliff era: The Money Rolls In (Fang) and The Prince (duh). I’m not sure if vocals were recorded for either.
Correction: there’s also We Are The Road Crew which was never released from the The Whole Motorhead(ache). Technically recorded in the studio (I think) during rehearsals.
after a lot of hearing those songs , ive got to say that bullet is a very solid ,about train ill say that it has very good riffs here and there ,but for me there is not connection beetween them , but bullet is a very good song im suprised that wasnt in the album
Not that I’d expect them to be played, but there is also DK rolls and all those other presidio tunes that we haven’t heard.
I would bet that Frayed gets played, then probably one of the unheard load/reload tunes.
I’ve given them plenty of spins in the car now, and here at work, and I have to say Train keeps growing on me more. I really like em both. Opinion of two younger metalheads(my 12 and 9 year olds whose likes vary from sabbath all the way up through five finger death punch) are that they both like Train better than Bullet, but do like em both.
huge autotune on a few of the "summers" of Hate Train. Cool song anyway, and I’m psyched htere’s more new shit/rare live stuff to explore! Looking forward to hearing the other new tunes.
Btw, my review of "The View" Is up on Metal-archives, I’ll do the whole album at some point..
Before Death Magnetic came out, I read an interview stating that 14 songs were written, 11 were recorded and 10 made it on the album. Shine (Just a Bullet Away) was clearly the 11th song, leaving 3 songs in demo form (Hate Train and Hellbound being two of them).
Plus, Metallica knows that the most hard core fans are going through great lengths to make it to these shows. It really wouldn’t be "fair" to premiere never-before-heard songs at one gig and not at another.
Tonight and Tomorrow night are each like Xmas Eve—Waking up to new ‘Tallica in the morning!!
also damn, Carpe Diem sounds brilliant live. Imma shit on them all if they don’t do frayed ends and fixxxer at some point during these concerts; c’mon everyone wants those two. Prince Charming would crush heads if it was played live too.
They’ve been going on stage about 11:00 pacific time, so it’s been some late nights for those going to the concerts as well as for those watching the play by play (so to speak) online.
I’m wondering if they’ll do a version of My Friend of Misery with Jason? He’s there again tonight.
Ok, pants changed… You know, I am excited about the fact that when I get to pay for Beyond Magnetic, the money is going where it belongs – to Metallica – and I don’t have to worry the money going to some greedy record company… Of course, paying for it will merely be a formality… This song will be joining Hate Train and Just A Bullet Away on my mp3 player very shortly…
Hmmm. Just got home from work and the downloaded Hell and Back.
Interesting song in that it seems more a Metallica song than the other two in regards to structure/arrangments/riff. It seems much more solid on first listen than the other two (although they’ve grown on me singnificantly).
I also wonder if they abandoned this one earlier in the process. The ‘clean’ guitar tone just doesn’t seem quite there.
The mix on all three BM songs just seems off at times. James’ vox seem way too high to me and that’s distracting.
But, man – what a great early Christmas present having new Metallica songs to listen to.
When I said James’ vox seem too high, I meant in the mix… not pitch wise.
However, my first listen to all these songs where on moderate volume at the computer desk. The first two sounded better when cranked LOUD.
I’m not sure which is the ‘best’ song from Beyond Magnetic. I don’t think it will be Hell & Back to my ears… while it might have the ‘best riff,’ it is some what rote in Metallica terms. Not that it’s bad at all.
The problem is that there are so many bits of song, it’s kinda hard to figure out what might be song #4 or what might be something that never got used. I posted a clip above where the guitar is clean and the song was thought to be Shine… it’s a very, very cool clip – so I’m hoping it’s song #4.
"I can’t believe that these brand new songs that I’ve never heard before don’t sound as familiar and comfortable to me as the classics I’ve been listening to for 20 to 30 years."
Sorry, mistakenly read an internet comment about how these songs compare to "the classics". Now I need to go put some listerine in my eyes/ears/mouth to get rid of the aftertaste.
I hold to my opinion that the best songs are the ones that grow on you over time. The ones that sound great the first time get tiring very quickly.
Record company is cleaning house, vids are getting taken down. I was intending to buy anyway.
Alright, wtf? Its 12:52 am here ont he east coast… Let’s see, its 9:52 pm there… Hasn’t Metallica hit the stage yet? Where’s the update to the tour journal?!?!? Uggghhhh, it’ll just be easier if I go to bed with the hope of waking up to new Metallica. Hey, why don’t they stream one of these 4 nights, like say tomorrow night?
It would be awesome to see some sabbath. I actually just finished reading the Tony Iommi(iron man) book a few minutes ago.
JD, it would be awesome if part of the first clip you showed turned into something. It seems they were pretty strategic as to what bits we got to hear, cause most of the ended up on DM or one the BM songs so far.
I’ve only listened to hell and back once so far and liked it a lot, but that was on a crappy laptop with low volume. I won’t be able to burn it to a disk till monday morning(by which time the last song will be out).
I will have to buy these gigs from livemet since there are so many rarities or special appearances. I used to buy a lot, but backed off(don’t need that many versions of the same thing). But these will be worth it.
JD, I agree that the vocals are pretty high in the mix, particularly noticeable when he’s hitting the higher notes.
Last new song is called Rebel of Babylon. Wow, reminds of years ago when people made up fake song titles for a new Metallica album, with song titles like "Waiting In The Wings". No clips of it out there yet… Hopefully when I wake up, there will be something somewhere.
Let this dark shine! Hmmmm… Currently on my first listen to Rebel… Now this song takes some mental processing… Sounds cool, but not melting my face like Bullet did on first listen. Gotta let this one sink in and see where it stands. What do you think, guys?
Is there any official word on the release of Beyond Magnetic? A date, even? Or are just getting these songs individually released on iTunes like James mentions during one of the shows? I am looking forward to actually buying this! As far as the live shows go, I hope they have an option to buy all 4 shows for a discount!
I hope they release these shows soon. I can certainly see them being part of a future fan can at least.
I am hoping for some more live rarities, never before heard tunes.
Maybe fixxer, house jack built, frayed, prince charming etc..
I can tell it’s a bit unpolished compared to the rest of DM, almost like just a riff mash-up, but that doesn’t stop it from being a rocker.
I’m thinking we might get an unreleased track at all four shows, isn’t there supposed to be four unreleased from Death Magnetic, and four Fillmore shows? Let’s hope.
Wonder if they will release any
Presidio material this way? Maybe Shadows of the Cross?
I’ve let Hate Train sink in a bit… it’s hard to digest a new song on just a listen or two.
Like a lot of Death Magnetic stuff the first few listens just seemed choppy… almost like the copied and pasted riffs together; the song also seems like they’re trying to rush through it.

Haven’t been able to find much video out there other than the 3 clips that were on blabbermouth. Please post links if anybody finds more!
I need a Carpe Diem Baby video!

Wow, that sounded pretty damn good!
That same youtuber has pretty good vid of Hate Train live:

I think you’re mistaking ‘heavy’ for thrashy or fast or something else.
Sabbath is heavy with just three notes.
I dunno, Blaster… I can think of quite a few tunes of the Loads/Stanger that are plenty more heavy than Hate Train.
http://overkill.pl/30-lecie-Metalliki-w-Fillmore-wystawa-DUZY-UPDATE,3459.html
Really? On Load(s)? Yeah, there’s heavy stuff on St. Anger but the production sucks the fun out of it. I’m just glad they’re back to heavy with good production values, whether there’s more heaviosity here or there doesn’t really matter anyway.
Good point. Thrashy, then. I enjoy when they get thrashy.
I agree, Blaster. Especially as I consider EotL the worst Metallica song ever recorded.
Really hope we hear "Shine" this week. Maybe even "Dead Kennedy Rolls"!
Kurt, I can name a few songs that I don’t care for, but none come close to EotL.
I think I’m the only one on the planet that likes Shoot Me Again. Yeah, it’s a bit too long… but, I absolutely love the vocal aproach.
Just A Bullet Away !!!

"Just A Bullet Away" lyrics:
All roads they lead to shame
All drowning in the blame
All reflections look the same
In the shine of the midnight revolver
All hide beneath a skin
A hope so paper thin
I’m at the door again
And the shine of the midnight revolver
Even the promise of danger has gone dull
Staring down the barrel of a 45
Suck on the barrel
Suck on the barrel
Suck it ’til it’s gone dry
For all reflections look the same
In the shine of the midnight revolver
Redemption purify
Will nothing satisfy
The scars just multiply
In the shine of the midnight revolver
Twisting in apocalypse
Death upon the fingertips
Frigid metal touches lips
And the shine of the midnight revolver
‘Cause you lied
Just a bullet away
Just a bullet away from leavin’ you
Just a bullet away
Stop the voices in my head
Caressing death again
Becomes the heroin
Forbidden medicine
Puts a shine on the midnight revolver
Eternal borderline
All the faces intertwine
Oh God… now I see mine
In the shine of the midnight revolver
Even the promise of danger has gone dull
Staring down the barrel of a 45
Suck on the barrel
Suck on the barrel
Suck… suck till it’s dry
For all reflections look the same
In the shine of the midnight revolver
Down In Misery
Down In Misery
Just a bullet away
Just a bullet away from leavin’ you
Just a bullet away
Stop the voices in my head
All roads they lead to shame
All drowning in the blame
Reflections look the same
In the shine of the midnight revolver
All hide beneath a skin
A hope so paper thin
I’m at the door again
And the shine of the midnight revolver
Even the promise of danger has gone dull
Staring down the barrel of a 45
Suck on the barrel
Suck on the barrel
Suck… suck till it’s dry
Do all reflections look the same
In the shine of the midnight revolver
‘Cause you lied
Yes you lied
Just a bullet away
Just a bullet away from leavin’ you
Just a bullet away
Stop the voices in my head (End of lyrics)
Holy Fucking SHINE!!!
Holy fuck holy fuck holy fuck
Everyone wake the hell up and listen to this!! Badass!
Every morning I wake up and there is new ‘tallica! This is better than fucking Christmas!

Kurt, you can make mp3’s from them using a YouTube downloader just to hold you over til we get the official release.
Thanks blaster. I’m cranking this sucker here at work while writing notes. I’m really digging this one.
When I woke up yesterday morning I already had the MetClub e-mail in my inbox with the code for Hate Train. Still waiting for Just A Bullet Away….
I hope I get it.
I thought this was Shine:

Since it’s apparently not, what is it?
Maybe it’s something else new we will get. I think there’s two more… I think Hell & Back and Hellbound are the same song. Not sure what the other one’s name might be.
The more I hear Hate Train and Just a Bullet Away, the more I like them.
Azrael – James said at the gig that Shine was Bullet’s working title.
I don’t think we’ll get Escape at these shows – I hope I’m wrong. I think we might get a Fixxxer and/or a Frayed Ends.
I also think we’re gonna see a Dave Mustaine, a Tony Iommi and an Ozzy Osbourne up there before it’s all done.
I hope we hear Hellbound TONIGHT! I am with you JD, the more I hear them, the more I like them. I am leaning a little bit more towards Bullet right now… That song is just so solid and it flows better. I REALLY hope that one gets airplay. Strong groove. Four Horsemen live with John Bush sounded amazing. They did the full song, including the slower part and middle solo!!!
huge autotune on a few of the "summers" of Hate Train. Cool song anyway, and I’m psyched htere’s more new shit/rare live stuff to explore! Looking forward to hearing the other new tunes.

Yeah 2 more DM songs to go.
They’ve been going on stage about 11:00 pacific time, so it’s been some late nights for those going to the concerts as well as for those watching the play by play (so to speak) online.
I’m wondering if they’ll do a version of My Friend of Misery with Jason? He’s there again tonight.
And the unreleased DM song of the third night is……Hell and Back
Just got back from my band’s gig…now listening to Hell and Back on Blabbermouth. Best riff of the 3 songs…best song too.
Hell & Back yeah !

I JUST listened to Hell and Back… Totally utterly fucking speechless… I gotta go change my pants now…
Ok, pants changed… You know, I am excited about the fact that when I get to pay for Beyond Magnetic, the money is going where it belongs – to Metallica – and I don’t have to worry the money going to some greedy record company… Of course, paying for it will merely be a formality… This song will be joining Hate Train and Just A Bullet Away on my mp3 player very shortly…
My ratings so far:
1. Just A Bullet Away
2. Hell And Back
3. Hate Train
Its not that I don’t really enjoy Hate Train, its that I LOVE Just A Bullet Away and Hell And Back.
Can anyone point to Mission Metallica clips of the unreleased 4th song (hopefully to be played tonight)?
Song 4?

Alright, wtf? Its 12:52 am here ont he east coast… Let’s see, its 9:52 pm there… Hasn’t Metallica hit the stage yet? Where’s the update to the tour journal?!?!? Uggghhhh, it’ll just be easier if I go to bed with the hope of waking up to new Metallica. Hey, why don’t they stream one of these 4 nights, like say tomorrow night?
How awesome would it be if Black Sabbath actually opened tonight?
…I don’t think that will happen, but I’d bet money members of Black Sabbath appear.

Rebel Of Babylon
Let this dark shine! Hmmmm… Currently on my first listen to Rebel… Now this song takes some mental processing… Sounds cool, but not melting my face like Bullet did on first listen. Gotta let this one sink in and see where it stands. What do you think, guys?
Is there any official word on the release of Beyond Magnetic? A date, even? Or are just getting these songs individually released on iTunes like James mentions during one of the shows? I am looking forward to actually buying this! As far as the live shows go, I hope they have an option to buy all 4 shows for a discount!
so what other rarities were played last night? Also I hope "Beyond MAgnetic" comes out as a CD, no way in hell I’m buying Mp3s.
HEY!! i just thought of something.. Where was JA RULE?????
haha
