WRAPPING UP SYMPHONICA
4.24.99

Celebrities spotted at the shows: film director Francis Ford Coppola, journalist Steffan Chirazzi, Producer Bob Rock, Metallica artist Mark DeVito, Metal Church & former Metallica roadie and occasional Hetfield stand-in John Marshall, current Ozzy and former Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin, Primus' Les Claypool, Cliff Burton's father Ray, Manager Peter Mensch and Cliff Burnstein, Members of the Ulrich clan including father Torbin, wife Skylar and son Myles, as well as Members of the Newsted, Hammett and Hetfield Families.

A program of the was handed out at both shows included the night's setlist (or "Metallica Selections"). Also included were brief bio's of the band, Kamen, as well Lighting designer John Broderick, the SF Symphony and Bill Graham Presents. The back page ran down the personnel involved including the entire symphony.. including all 22 violinists! The program is now posted at the Metallica Club web site.

Because of the symphony being behind Lars, he was not able to use his regular monitors that he uses to listen to the rest of the band. He was fitted with special earplug-monitors that allowed him to listen to James and the rest of the band. You could even see the long wires trailing behind be as sat behind his kit. Special glass partitions also separated the band and symphony in certain places.. this was mainly for noise control as the stage was mic'd to record the orchestra.

The show was heavily recorded including cameras! If the recording went well expect a video and compact disc released this FALL. Because of the recording the venue was kept realtively lit throughout the show.

Remember to check out ISOnTour for the latest reviews and setlists for these very special shows! Were you at the gig? fill us in!

LARS & JAMES ON SYMPHONICA
4.17.99

Jam TV has quotes from James and Lars about the upcoming Symphonica shows. James says of the two new songs: "We came up with a couple of things. Maybe the first one has the symphony in mind, but the other one is pure Metallica. They're both very fresh sounding, but they're really very different from each other as well. We're still working on titles." Lars adds "Well, they do have working titles, but not for the purpose of interview, One of the main things we wanted to do is to see if we could write two new songs for this; a week ago we didn't have two new songs, and a week later we do."

About the possibility of these Symphonica shows being released later Lars says "Unless we fall on our ass, there will be a project. We have the film crew and the recording crew there. It's not something we'll take out on the road and tour for years."

MORE KAMEN ON SYMPHONICA
4.17.99

Wall of Sound reports on the Symphonica shows with another talk with Michael Kamen. Kamen says of the song choices "I helped them choose songs that were benchmarks in their career, the important early songs which brought them to people's attention. It was fairly obvious to take 'Enter Sandman' and 'Master of Puppets,' certain titles you couldn't leave out. And there were others that we wanted to get experimental with and see if we could do, like 'The Unforgiven,' which I did a chart for, but we're leaving out. There's a few that might sneak back in and a few that might get left to the side. There's a lot of material for us to choose from, plus they've written two new songs."

LARS ON WOODSTOCK
4.16.99

Spin Magazine has this from Lars on Woodstock '99: "It's just another fucking gig isn't it? I can't get too caught up in all the nostalgic crap. That was more like back in '94. There was a lot of people who were very cynical about the whole thing. I do think the cool thing about it is that it's kind of rare when you have shows in America where you bring together a really big variety of groups and artists. Everything like Ozzfest and Lollapalooza are specific to some kind of audience. The cool thing about this Woodstock is that it's much more in line with the European festival circuit where you've got all these different kinds of bands together. As an artiste, that's pretty inspiring (laughs). I think there should be more of that type of shit in America, where you get Metallica and Sheryl Crow together, where you get to hang out with Phil Collins backstage."

EVEN MORE ON SYMPHONICA
4.15.99

The San Francisco Examiner newspaper features an article on the upcoming symphony shows, with bits from Michael Kamen. Notably, Kamen reveals a new version of Call of Ktulu featuring the accompaniment of the symphony with himself on piano. The article also mentions "the band has written two new songs that will also be played live for the first time."

Michael Kamen also notes he's been writing arrangements for "4 solid months" and also quotes: "Oh, these guys are sweet. Not the stereotypic heavy metal stars at all. And what people don't always appreciate is how gifted they are as musicians. Lars Ulrich is really the best rock drummer in the world. And technically, their music has many organic elements you find in the finest contemporary classics."

"And it's a big experiment! Peculiar and brave, and stretching the limits of both worlds."

BAM ON SYMPHONICA
4.09.99

BAM Magazine interviewed James and Lars for an article in their April 9th issue. Here are some excerpts about the Symphonica show.

"It's always been in my head to create giant pieces of music. I can tell you that 'Fade To Black' has been taken off the list. Neither 'Unforgiven' worked. We wanted to try something special where we jam the two together but was a no go. It just didn't sound special," Hetfield told BAM Magazine. "What do I do betwen songs? Do I rap with the audience? Do I say the mandatory 10 'fucks' in each rap or should it be completely silent so people can soak in the peice of music they just heard?"
Ulrich told BAM: "Go fucking naked, wear a tuxdeo, put your fucking mom's pajama's on. Drink Evian, drink beer, smoke pot - just be open to a really different expeience. Whether this fails or ends up being really cool, it's great that 7000 people in the Bay Area want to take that chance with us"
The DATs and cameras will be up and rolling for this affair - with any luck Elektra will be rolling out the official live album and video companion in time for the holiday season - so when the guys talk set lists they're also effectively talking track list for the next Metallica album. As it stands now, the set list is 22 songs, but they'll only play between 16 and 18, so some must go. Also, at several points during these interveiws both men ( James and Lars ) hint at playing one or two new songs, James suggesting maybe something written expressly for the symphony jam, though, as of press time, he says the new stuff is "just a bunch of raw ideas".Covers have been ruled out, so expect nothing from the 'Garage' albums."

Thanks to Greg for the excerpts of this article!
