Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, along with the band's former tour accountant Tim Duffy, have signed the first act to their label The RecordCompany (TRC): Canadian group DDT.

The five- piece group inked the deal on Saturday (April 25) to the Los Angeles- based TRC, which started on January 1 and is distributed through Metallica's label Elektra Entertainment, according to Duffy.

As for DDT, the high- energy act, which mixes funk, rap, and ska into their brand of hard rock, is expected to start recording their first album for the label in June at Vancouver's Armory Studios, then mix it in an undetermined Los Angeles studio. The band's frontman Brian Howes will handle some production for the as- yet- untitled album, which they hope to have out in September, according to the band's manager Tom Barfield.

The group consists of two frontmen -- Howes and Cory White -- along with drummer Bobby James, guitarist Mike MacKay (aka Mike Stand), and bassist Dr. Dave (whose real name is Dave DeVindisch). Their debut release was a seven- song EP titled Lotgoop, released by themselves in Canada and in parts of Europe in 1996 with government grant money. (Lotgoop stands for Living Off the Generosity of Other People.)

"Take Away" from Lotgoop is expected to appear on the soundtrack to the film Laserhawk, which should hit stores in late 1998 on a label still to be determined. The film will be in Canadian theaters around the same time via Alliance Films. Laserhawk will also be aired in the U.S. on the Disney Channel.

DDT were also nominated for Best Live Performance in 1996 at the West Coast Music Awards, and have appeared on Lollapalooza in 1996.
