AUGUST 1999-PRESENT RUMOR MILL

TOUR?
10.17.01

Rick tells us "According to a friend that works at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Metallica will play Jan. 1, and 2nd. I am not 100% on the information, but it should be correct."

MATT BISSNOETTE
5.31.01

ZeNico tells us "MetallicA is dealing with Matt Bissonette (a great bassist who has worked with Satriani, Steve Vai, and much more). I know it from a journalist, and the info is almost sure !!!

You can find any info (in french) on www.metallicatuw.com

JASON TO JOIN VOIVOD?
5.31.01

Rumors are popping up in many places that former Metallica bassist, Jason Newsted might take up the singer/bassist vacancy in Canadian metal band Voivod. 'MBody' song written by Jason appeared on their 1997 album called Phobos.

A recent post by Voivod member Away (Michael) stated: "somme (sic) fans might be VERY excited with the near future of Voivod."

A release on the band's website Voivod.com says, very cryptically: "Some old friends have called (Not Blacky, Not Snake you diehards) A few changes on the horizon for Voivod" (note: Blacky & Snake are old members of the band, that were also rumored to return to the band's line-up.

Thanks to Seb for the initial story.

FLOTSAM & JASON?
4.03.01

DrPDirty sent us two e-mails, one on March 29th and again on April 1st. He states that he lives in Phoenix and is "good friends" with Flotsam & Jetsam and that Jason is rehearsing with them. He also sent along a 26 second audio clip of "rehearsal" from March 25th.

We cannot confirm or deny, although the audio clip sounds a little too "polished" to be a rehearsal to our ears. What do you think?, let us know at the Message Boards.

UPDATE: Flotsam & Jetsam is currently touring with their bassist Jason Ward, who has been with the band since 1991.

MAIDEN SF
3.22.01

Matthijs, chapter head of HARVESTER OF SORROW based in the Netherlands, lets us know this pretty wild rumor from the French hard rock/metal magazine HARDROCK:

"In it's newest issue[Hardrock announces] that Metallica's replacement for Newsted will be......STEVE HARRIS from Iron Maiden. Pretty unbelievable, but their story makes sense so I thought I'd inform you guys about it. Apparently Maiden is taking a year and a half off and Harris agreed to help Metallica out for one album and one tour. Personally I don't know what to think of it, but that's what they have..."

ROCK SHOW
2.24.01

No Remorse lets us know:

"Hey guys and gals. I just wanted to let all of you know about something! Megadeth's frontman Dave Mustained was on ROCKSHOW Today (which is aired on VH1 - every friday 12pm EST). He was talking about David Ellefson in the Megadeth - Hangar 18 Video.

So Scott Ian (the current host of ROCKSHOW) asked Dave, "Did David Ellefson thought about joining Metallica since Jason Newsted left the band?"

Dave Mustaine said: "The Day before Jason quit Metallica, Lars called me and asked about our relationship between me and David Ellefson." Then he said, "I went to David Ellefson and told him that if Metallica asked him to join. I wouldnt mind that you join."

I am assuming that

- Metallica knew that Jason Newsted Would leave the band

- Lars has been going around and asking people.

- Metallica might be looking for a bass player who is known.

The point Im making is that I think this is pretty interesting and odd. No one talked about David Ellefson when Jason Newsted left the band. Also, Scott Ian said that Mike Inez is working on a project with some other people (sorry I don't remember their names) So this takes him out of the picture. Also, Les Claypool also have his own projects [Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade, Oysterhead (with Stewart Copeland of the Police and Trey Anastasio of Phish, they will be recording a studio album shortly).

So, Who will be the Metallica's new bassist?"

Also thanks to Dennis and Davy

WHAT'S THE DEAL!?!
2.19.01

Both VH1 AND Sonicnet have a tour date listed for Metallica, specifically April 20, 2001 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Of course this date has not been made official, but dates don't just pop out of thin air on two major sites... Could this be a "meet our new bassist" show or a farewell extravaganza?? Maybe we will be informed soon.. Thanks to all those who have emailed in regards to this story.

FALSE!

BRAVE RADIO
2.11.01

Brave Radio reports that "Rumor has it that METALLICA's James Hetfield will play bass on the new album, but then names like Mike Inez (ALICE IN CHAINS) and an unnamed New Yorker (Scott Ian? Frank Bello??) are being plastered around the net as possible touring replacements for Jason Newsted.

MIKE INEZ
2.06.01

rstu4@email.msn.com lets us know, "I was listening to 95.5 KLOS, the local rock radio station in Los Angeles, this afternoon, and they said during the Rock Report that Mike Inez, the bass guitarist from Alice in Chains, is the leading man right now to be Jason's replacement. That was the first time that I had heard this information [though not the first we've heard, his name has been mentioned as a possible replacement since the day Jason left], so I don't know how true it is; even so, I thought it was pretty interesting, and I knew that you would want to know."

REPLACEMENT RUMORS
1.31.01

Here's the latest batch...thanks to all who have contributed!

Craig lets us know, "I was listening to my local rock radio station, 94.9 zeta, and I heard them say something about auditions for Metallica. I checked out the radio stations website and sure enough, the headline read Metallica wants YOU and it basically said that the station had been approached by Metallica and its management and told to start taking bass audition tapes. You can send in a tape to the station and they will forward it to the band and their management. Haven't heard of any other radio stations doing this but it looks legit generally speaking."

This one is definatley interesting, though I don't know much credence it should be given... Many people have sent in the following, but Ryan lets us know that "In Tampa, Florida, the 98 Rock morning show, with Bubba the Love Sponge, claims that "Hollywood" or Hulk Hogan has been contacted by Metallica's management to fill in as a "temporary replacement."

REPLACEMENT RUMORS
1.23.01

Check back here for the latest rumors surrounding Jason, his replacement, and the future of Metallica...Remember, these are just RUMORS!

Lost Rose reports:

"There is a rumor going down that Duff [McKagen, ex-Guns 'N Roses] will replace Jason Newsted, who left Metallica recently. According to K-rock 92.3 in NY, Lars had this to say about Duff: "he's a well rounded musician, and plays good bass and backup vocals". Will Duff play with Metallica then? We'll see...Rock on!"

Thanks to Eirik.
