METALLICA RADIO REPORT

Host Scott Farrell was his usually smarmy self as Metallica and friends went through 2 and half hours of jamming, laughing and taking phone calls.

The band, and friends pulled out their acoustic instruments and played Low Man's Lyric, Helpless, The Four Horsemen, a version Last Caress more truer to the original Misfits and Poor Twisted Me, They also took a special request from LA Dodger/drummer Mike Piazza via telephone for Creeping Death, also played was a pre-recorded Nothing Else Matters with Chris Isaak on back up vox, the last song was an all star rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Tuesday's Gone featuring the vocal stylings of Pepper Keenan and a reprise of Free Bird.

Sitting in with the band were David Miles on Hurdy Gurdy, Blues Traveler's Jon Popper on mouth harp, Jim Martin on banjo/guitar, Pepper Keenan (of COC) on guitar/vox, Gary Rossington (of Lynyrd Skynyrd) on guitar, Les Claypool (of Primus) on bass, and Jerry Cantrell on guitar and Sean Kinney on drums and bongos (both of Alice in Chains).

DON'T CALL US, WE'LL CALL YOU!

The Metallica Club had a few things to say about the Radio Metallica thing..."Metallica has always searched for new ways to reach all their loyal fans, but on December 18th the band will be literally 'reaching out and touching them,' by calling on selected fans directly in an unprecedented radio show created by the band members themselves.

This live radio-only exclusive, billed as Don't Call Us, We'll Call You, will be available to all radio stations (in any format) capable of downlinking this special Metallica-signal, via satellite*, on December 18th at 7PM Pacific/10PM Eastern time.

WHY WAS JAYMZ AT THE LIBRARY?

It isn't easy being in Metallica.. just ask James. James doesn't just sing and play guitar (like that's easy!).. but he also writes the lyrics.. and before he just slaps something down, he has to know about it. Case in point: for the song Fixxxer, James thought it was necessary to know a bit about the voodoo he was to sing about. But at some point James thought too much of this would clutter or complicate the song... we're not sure if the songs was more "hardcore" voodoo at some point lyrically or if the song just worked itself out to be what we know now.

    METALLICA'S MARATHON RUN

While ReLoad is busy debuting at Number 1 on the Billboard's Top 200, 1991's Metallica is STILL in the Top 200 holding it's spot at number 106 an entire six years after it's release!!! Congratulations, guys!!!

    NUMBER FREAKIN' ONE!!!

One week and 435,411 copies later, ReLoad cracked open the Billboard Top 200 to debut at number 1!!! Congrats guys!!!

    RELOAD COMMERCIAL

Lately, during great episodes of Comedy Central's South Park, during commercial time, there have been commercials for ReLoad. No idea if this has to do with Metallica's urge to sponsor South Park or not, but it is pretty damn cool.

    MOVIE SCREENING POSTPONED

Virgin has postponed the showing of 'Metallica Live' because it never received certification. Virgin has promised to supply tickets to the people who bought the Re-Load Album on a first come first serve basis whenever the new screening is announced.

It seems a few of Philadelphian's aren't big Metallica fans.. two City Councilman are opposed to Metallica playing the free show and appear to be going as far as going to court to stop it.

    UPDATE: Philly resident's and Metallica fans can blame council persons Anna Verna, James Kenney and Frank DiCicco for this possible delay;

UPDATE: According to press reports the owners of the parking lot (who also own the Corestates and Spectrum) Metallica wants to have the free show in wants to move the free show into the Old Spectrum arena, this would dramatically reduce the number of spectator's.

    GUITAR WORLD COMMENTS ON RELOAD

Fixxxer - features an ominous, droning bassline, undulating guitar licks and a riff that sounds like a cross between Leper Messiah and an an ancient Indian mantra.
The Memory Remains - starts as a mid-paced grind that slithers with serpentine guitars before shifting into an unsettling Hebraic-sounding chant by guest vocalist Marianne Faithfull.
Low Man's Lyric is a shuffling ballad in the style of Tom Waits or Nick Cave, replete with tattered acoustic strums, violins and hurdy-gurdy.

    METAL EDGE COMMENTS ON RELOAD

Gerri Miller of Metal Edge magazine posts: "I like what I heard a lot. Starts out with Fuel, one of the ones I heard at the studio, loved then, and still do now. A burner. The Memory Remains is a slow groove song... It has Marianne Faithfull on backing vocals and I don't like that part of it. This one is the first single but I can't figure that out--I can think of 10 better picks for singles! Devil's Dance is a cool, heavy groove song you may have heard live. The Unforgiven II revisits The Unforgiven-- same melody, different lyrics. Still cool. Better Than You is definitely one to headbang to. Slither is a catchy mid-tempo song with a heavy groove-- a lot of them are heavy groove songs, like the next two, Carpe Diem Baby and Bad Seed. Where The Wild Things Are used to be called Martini. It's kind of slow and atmospheric but the guitar solo is great-- actually all the guitar work is great. Prince Charming is the fastest tune on the album. Rockin' and killer! Low Man's Lyric used to be called My Eyes, and is a folky sort of ballad with a hurdy-gurdy on it. This album's Mama Said. Attitude has plenty of it-- this one smokes. Fixxxer ends it with an intense groove jam thing that goes over 8 minutes. Several songs (5) are over 6 minutes, but this is the longest on the album. If you liked "Ain't My Bitch" and "King Nothing" from Load, a lot of these are in that vein.

    SINGLE RADIO PREMIERE

The Memory Remains, the first single from Metallica's ReLoad album will make its radio debut on October 28.. on sale in stores November 11 (US).

UPDATE: The actual release date of the single may be November 12, a Wednesday due to the Veteran's day holiday on 11-11.

UPDATE: Word is the English release of 'Memory' isn't until November 10.

    BRIDGE SHOW

Reports from the Bridge School Benefit show #1 says the band played acoustic versions of

  • Low Man's Lyric (lyrics available thanks to IS member KizBitt at ReLoad Lyrics).
  • Helpless
  • (Lynyrd Skynyrd's) Tuesday's Gone (with Jerry Cantrell)
  • Poor Twisted Me
  • Fade to Black
  • The Four Horsemen
  • Nothing Else Matters
  • Last Caress (slide guitar/country version with John Popper of Blues Traveler)

UPDATE: Brutallix reports: "The show was unbelievable, and the guys weren't as serious as the other acts. They were having fun and have definitely proven that they can play an Unplugged show. Metallica now reigns supreme on all areas. It was amazing to see how they transformed songs like Helpless and Four Horsemen into the acoustic form."

UPDATE: Setlist of Sunday 10-20's show same as 10-19; Metallica headlined the 2nd night, Smashing Pumpkins the first night.

    METALLICA MAKES A VIDEO

MTV's Week In Rock will have some footage of the making of new Metallica video "The Memory Remains" on the weekend of 10-24.

    JAMES' IRISH FOLK SONG

Low Man's Lyric might be one of the strangest songs to appear on ReLoad will be a song said to been by James' pet project. This song has been described as an "evil Irish folk song," and should make for an interesting listen.

    UNFORGIVEN 2

Look for some similarities between the two Unforgiven's... mostly that "What I've felt.. What I've know.." music.

    NEW IS ReLOAD TRACKLIST PAGE

    IS ReLoad Tracklisting Page.

    WANTED: CONCERT SITE

    From the Metallica Club:

To celebrate the release of their new album, RE-LOAD, which is set for release November 18th, Metallica would like to play a concert - for free. The only problem is that no one will have them.

Despite the best efforts of local radio stations and promoters, several major cities including Chicago and Boston, have rejected the band's overtures to play a free concert for their fans in celebration of the completion of their new album and their newly won freedom from the rigors of life in the studio. "We were sitting around brainstorming one day," said drummer Lars Ulrich, "And we were trying to come up with an idea that would please us and please the fans. It was like - FREE CONCERT! There's no better way to break out of the 'studio mode' than getting out there and jamming with your fans."

Unfortunately, Metallica's enthusiasm has been challenged by the bureaucracy involved in getting a city to OK such a popular event. Adds Lars, "We've been turned down by some of the finest municipalities in the country in our request to play public parks, stadiums, abandoned air -force and naval bases, airports and parking lots!" Upon realizing that the authorities "didn't quite get what we had in mind," the band decided to go directly to the fans and ask them to come up with a place to throw the bash.

The details are simple: The free concert will be held on Tuesday, November 11 (Veteran's Day). The only snag is location. So Metallica have created a phone line (1-800-804-1400) and an e-mail address (Metallica@Elektra.com) for fans to offer their suggestions as to where the band should play. The concert must take place outdoors (according to the band: " no clubs or arenas - this has to be a big free show for anyone wishing to make the trip").

This is not a contest. Your reward is the comfort you can take knowing that you helped find that host city or town that will approve a park, parking lot, cornfield, etc. large enough and fan friendly enough to accommodate all the diverse Metallica loyalists hungering for this one-of-a-kind event. The group asks that all suggestions be realistic and feasible. The "FREE CONCERT" suggestion box will operative until October 26th, 1997. " Thousands of heads are better than four, " proclaims Lars. "We want this to happen and we're hoping that somebody out there can cut through the bureaucracy and find a place for us to have a little fun with a few (thousand) of our closest friends."

If you have any suggestions for this concert, please call Metallica at (1-800-804-1400). Or e-mail the band at (Metallica@Elektra.com. Or log on the to (www.Elektra.com). One call per household, please.

    OFFICIAL: 11-18; RELOAD

The Metallica Club reports that the new Metallica album, called ReLoad will be released:

  • 11-14 in Japan
  • 11-17 All territories outside of USA
  • 11-18 USA

    UPDATE:

    THE ReLOAD ART

Look for another Serrano photo in the vein of Load. Liner notes like Load except replace the Corbjin photos with live photos (possibly by Corbjin or Halfin), Jaymz scrawls a line or two of lyrics over the page.

    INITIAL REPORTS ON ReLOAD

Mark DeVito, who has done some great artwork for Metallica and all around cool guy, was in the studio recently. Here's what he had to say:"They were pretty f*&kin good! Fixxxer and Bad Seed are damn heavy as well as Fuel which seems to be the heaviest of the six I heard. The other three were still under construction and seemed to be of a lighter nature, along the wasting my hate genre. Martini is really strange but catchy."

We also have some cool things from an another source:
"Unforgiven II contains the riff played over "What I felt, what I feel..." part.... There is a "evil folk" song on it. 11 of the 13 songs sound like they could easily fit on Load. Fuel and Devil Dance being the exceptions"

Special thanks to Mark... he's a gem of a guy and I know two guys on AOL who miss him a lot!

    METAL EDGE REPORTS ON RELOAD

Gerri Miller of Metal Edge got to visit the band in the studio, she got to talk to everyone BUT James, as he is conserving his voice for vocal recording; Gerri says: "I got a total of 2 1/2 hours with Jason, Kirk, and Lars (in that order) and some photos in the studio including James but not of the whole band together.
We talked about the new album extensively, the Load 'sellout' issue, tour plans (International first; sheds late summer), the movies in the works, feelings about the Net/online, etc.
I also got to hear six songs, some of which will get title changes; my favorites were a slamming song called "Fuel" and another heavy groove rocker called "Bad Seed." I also heard a cool sequel to "Unforgiven" that may be called "Unforgiven Too" (or II)--it's a new arrangement and has new lyrics. There will be 13 total. I'll have more when the transcript's back.

UPDATE: Metal Edge says about the album cover: "they wouldn't tell me specifically other than it does involve blood and does tie in with the Load cover."

    MARIANNE FAITHFULL SINGS ON RELOAD

Marianne Faithfull, 60's folk singer of As Tears Go By (more well know for her being a friend of Mick Jagger), has contributed vocals for as yet unknown track on ReLoad. (Click here for more about Marianne Faithful)

UPDATE: Much Music reports the name of this song to be: The Memory Remains.

UPDATE: According to the Addicted to Noise site: The Marianne Faithfull part on the Memory Remains is a "vocal melodic line with no words." Metallica manager Cliff Burnstein describes it as: "It's a vocal melody with no lyric, it's like nothing you've ever heard before." (thanks Matt)

JAMES & JASON DO BIG JIM

Look for James singing back up vocals on a few songs and for a song co-written by Jason (Fatso's World) on the debut album from Jim Martin called Milk And Blood on sale September 29.

METALLICA, SOUTH PARK & ORGAZMO SOUNDTRACK?

Rolling Stone magazine reports about Orgasmo, a film written and directed by Trey Parker, co-creator of the cable TV show South Park. Nickel Bag is doing the soundtrack and is said to be courting Metallica for it, the article goes on to note that Metallica has expressed their support for South Park by asking to sponsor the show. (which might lead to a song on the soundtrack??)Other bands to look for on the soundtrack are Dust Bros, Primus and possibly Tool and Beck, the movie itself is said to be a spoof on "porn movies."

UPDATE: Ain't It Cool News reports the spelling as Orgazmo.

    ALCOHOLICA? not JAMES

It's been confirmed that the sightings of James with non-alcohol beer is more than trend, it's the real thing. James recently confirmed he no longer partakes in the indulgence of alcoholic beverage. "...I'm not drinking booze anymore; I've quit! I still have the bar going at home, and I'll pour some cognac for my friends- some Hennesy or something real nice. But I'm on the non-alcoholic booze- it's called water! I don't miss the hangovers, whatsoever! But I do miss the taste of beer." He also mentioned that his favorite thing accompanying his cigars is "Francesca."

RUN THROUGH THE JUNGLE -Metallica does CCR

MTV and various sources report Metallica doing Run Through The Jungle, a Creedance Clearwater Revival song on an upcoming tribute to CCR. This will be a 36 song double CD for the price of a single CD with benefits going to pediatric AIDS charities. The project is being formed by Jeff Fogerty, son of deceased CCR-er Tom, who relayed this info in a Internet CCR mailing list. Fogerty also cautioned that the project is early in the formative stages, there is no record company in place yet, and it would be a Spring '98 release.

Lars has stated that the release of album #7 in late 1997, will be followed sometime in 1998 with the long awaited return of Garage Days.. this will be a compilation of both Garage Days and the b-sides that the band has released over the years..

UPDATE: No release dates have been made available, but many of the band members have mentioned this.. so it's probably going to happen.

The only movie to (legally) feature the music of Metallica, "Paradise Lost: The Robin Hood Hills Murders", will be released to home video on May 27th. The movie is a documentary about the killings of two 8 year old boys, and the subsequent trial of 3 heavy metal music listener's for the crime. The movie feature 3 Metallica songs: Orion, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and Call of Ktulu.

    MUSTAINE likes LOAD

In a radio interview promoting his band's new album on Detroit's 101.1 WRIF Drew & Mike show, Megadeth's Dave Mustaine was asked what he thought about Metallica. Dave said he liked the new album, and thought it was now popular to NOT like Metallica. He also made several comments on how he and James were connected because of the unique way the two played guitar.. and that the two were the influences, or even the influences of the influences of a lot of guitar players out there today.
(More to come when/if I get a tape of this conversation)

UPDATE:Megadeth's new album Cryptic Writings was released in the US on June 17... it included a somewhat controversial song FFF which some say sounds a little too much like Motorbreath.
